Do you remember when I told you last week that weād be going on a trip today? And do you remember when I used that old phrase āSmoke āem if you got āem!ā? Well, thereās a whole lot of tripping going on here and they were definitely smoking!
āPurple Hazeā. Yeah, baby! The name alone sounds trippy. This is the music I cut my teeth on.
There canāt be anyone reading this who hasnāt heard of Jimi Hendrix. Written in 1967 by Jimi, āPurple Hazeā showcases his extraordinary talent and inventive guitar playing. Listeners interpret the song as referring to a psychedelic experience; Hendrix described it as a love song. Hmm, interesting.
Regardless of what people may think of this type of music, nothing can change the fact that āPurple Hazeā launched not one but two revolutions: late-sixties psychedelia and the unprecedented genius of Jimi Hendrix. “Purple Haze” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and has been called one of the greatest guitar songs of all time.
You decide. Here is the Jimi Hendrix Experience and āPurple Hazeā.
Smoke āem if you got āem!
Far out, man! His guitar fingering was amazing!
Ok, here’s the question of the day:
Jimi Hendrix is a member of an exclusive and extremely unique club. What is the name of that infamous club?
The answer will be given next week.
As a reminder, here’s the question from last week.
Can you name the doo-wop group who had a hit revival of “You Belong to Me” in 1962?
A few of you got it right (you know who you are)! And the answer is … The Duprees.
Well, whaddaya say we score some snacks and meet At The Movies on Thursday? And don’t forget to check out Deb’s “trippy” post tomorrow!
‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky!
See you on the flip side.

The list is far too long. Sometimes I forget Bowie is gone and Glenn Frey and it hits me all over again. The Day the Music Died š

It certainly is a long list, even longer if we add writers and poets gone too soon. The artistic path is not an easy one, for many reasons. š “The Day the Music Died” š¶š

Nice description! Did you see Jimi at Woodstock, D? We saw him on New Year’s Eve 1969 at the Fillmore East; plenty of smoke and no mud!

Yes, twice, at the Big W. and in Boston the next year. No one else compared.

The Mile High Club?
Even I heard of Hendrix but I don’t think of him as the legend that many people seem to. Not enough weed, I guess.

Yeah the 27 club, one of those clubs you don’t want to be a member of.

He has a Blue Plaque where he lived in London, is that the club?

What a lovely name … the Blue Plaque Club. Unfortunately, no. Nick got it right with 27 Club. I go into more detail next week but if you can’t wait, Google it. Let’s just say people are dying to get into that club.

For any guitar enthusiasts out there:
Jimi used Seymour Duncan pickups since 1968, when Seymour presented them to him at a Cincinnati show.
He never stopped using them ever since on his ’68 Fender Stratocaster.
If you notice, Jimi (as a left hand player) is playing a right hand guitar flipped over and strung backwards.
That created a unique set up where the high E string (treble) would be at a distance from the pickups normally reserved for the (bass) low E string and vice versa.
This factored into the uniquely identifiable sound of Hendrix.
But, we must never forget…it is never the equipment…it’s all in the hands, baby! šøš„
