National Kentucky Day: An American Cinquain

Written for Tanka Tuesday. Our host,
Colleen, invites us to write an American
Cinquain on a theme of our choosing.
I chose National Kentucky Day.

‘Tucky
Fair bluegrass state
Horses run wild and free
Rolling green hills under the sun
Proud land

Bourbon
A rich, warm glow
Old stories softly told
Where southern hospitality
Abides

  1. This is a wonderful and festive tribute to Kentucky, Nancy! Those cinquains capture the warm glow of the Bluegrass State so perfectly. By the way, today we are celebrating Dasehra in India, a festival which is celebrated pan India and it comes 20 days before Diwali. I wish you a life full of light and happiness 😊

  2. I worked with a girl from Kentucky, and she used to make me laugh by saying, ‘Tell me a hillbilly joke I haven’t heard yet.” Horses and bourbon were the two things I thought of, too.

    1. It’s the birthplace of Stephen Foster who brought people much joy with the many grand old songs he composed. He died penniless in Bellevue Hospital after being found in a pool of blood from a cut in his neck when he fell in his room at a Bowery hotel. He was 38 years old.

      1. She was proud and could easily joke about her state. Interesting fact is that Florida’s state song is “Old Folks at Home” (also known as Suwannee River)–written by Stephen Foster, who never visited the state of Florida.
