Written for dVerse Poetics: Thirteen
Songs, Thirteen Hauntings. Our host,
Sanaa, has offered thirteen songs to
inspire us to write a poem, letting the
music determine the mood, a doorway
into a different Halloween world.
I have chosen “Black Magic Woman”
by Santana for my quatrain.

She moves where shadows lose their shape,
A slow, intoxicating draft,
A whisper in a velvet cape,
A pull that needs no spell or craft.
The room grows thin, the pulse beats deep,
A sudden chill along the bone,
A secret that the night must keep
While skin meets shadow, skin alone.
No warning stirs the heavy air,
Just fever rising in the dark,
And the sweet madness lingering there,
Long after she has left her mark.
