The Bare Necessities

Written for Song Lyric Sunday
“Celebrating Go Topless Day”

This week at Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday, the theme is “Celebrating Go Topless Day” and our challenge is to write about a song that mentions bare, birthday suit, buff, exposed, liberated, naked, naturist, nude, or skin. I’ve chosen two numbers by a couple of guys who really know how to sing a song and make it mean something …. Joe Cocker and Frank Sinatra. While they moved in entirely different musical circles, both are frequently compared for their powerful and masterful approach to vocal phrasing and interpreting songs written by other artists. Cocker is known as a master of cover songs, especially tracks by The Beatles; he searched out emotional material and made it his own. Sinatra is known as “The Voice” because his smooth, intimate crooning and exceptional breath control set a new standard for popular singing; he relied on the Great American Songbook, interpreting works by legendary writers like Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hammerstein. Both men are credited with co-writing a handful of minor tracks but neither one ever wrote any of their well-known songs. I’m a big fan of both these legendary performers and have many of their albums, including the two mentioned here today.

Ok, kids …. let’s listen to a couple of tunes by Joe Cocker and Frank Sinatra.

Joe Cocker was born in 1944 in Sheffield, UK, the son of Harold, an aircraftman in the Royal Air Force and Madge, a homemaker. As a teen, he started singing R&B and blues in local pubs while working as a gasfitter. In 1969, his performance of “With a Little Help from My Friends” at Woodstock made him a global star.

“Naked Without You” is a soulful song by Joe Cocker from his 1999 album No Ordinary World, his 17th studio album; it was co-written by Andrew Roachford and originally performed by the British R&B and soul-rock band Roachford. The song is a raw expression of deep regret, heartbreak, and emotional vulnerability after a breakup caused by the singer’s own mistakes. He admits to breaking his partner’s heart and violating a vow, realizing too late what he had and laments throwing away a deep love. He has been completely stripped of his protective layers, armor, and identity; without his partner, he feels exposed, weak, and “ugly” because he hurt the person who truly loved him. His mind and physical space are empty and haunted by her absence, leaving him sleepless and consumed by sorrow.

LYRICS

What have I done I’ve broke your heart
Now there’s no sun just cold and dark
Without your smile I can’t laugh
Without you baby I’m just a half
I didn’t know what I had
I didn’t know I’d feel this sad
But I feel

Naked without you
I feel crazy without you
I feel naked without you

What have I done? I’ve broke a vow
But I’m the one who’s crying now
Without your touch I can’t feel
Without forgiveness I can’t heal
Nobody else can take your place
And if I don’t see your angel face

I feel naked without you
I feel crazy about you
I feel naked without you

I hurt the one that really loved me
Don’t look at me, I feel ugly
I feel naked without you

I’m so tired that I can’t sleep
I threw away a love so deep

I’m naked without you
I feel crazy without you
I feel naked without you

Naked without you in my head
Crazy without you in my bed

I feel naked without you
So naked without you
Crazy without you, my love

Naked without you
Naked without you
I feel crazy without you, oh my girl
Naked without you
(Naked without you)
I feel naked without you
(Crazy without you)
Oh my girl
Naked without you

Frank Sinatra was born in 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey, the son of Sicilian immigrants.  As a teenager he decided to become a singer after watching Bing Crosby perform and started singing at local nightclubs. In 1940, Sinatra joined Tommy Dorsey’s band and after two years of chart-topping success, he decided to strike out on his own. He launched a massive solo career, sparking hysteria among young female fans.

“I’ve Got You Under My Skin” was written by Cole Porter in 1936 and defined by Frank Sinatra’s 1956 swinging big-band arrangement by Nelson Riddle. It became one of Sinatra’s signature songs, famous for its building tension, rhythmic drive, and a celebrated trombone solo. The song flips the script on the negative idiom “under your skin” (which usually means being irritated) into an obsessive, inescapable, and deeply passionate relationship. The lyrics describe an overwhelming, irresistible obsession and deep emotional attachment to someone while portraying a tense inner battle where the singer knows the relationship is unwise, yet surrenders completely to desire. The object of his desire is deeply ingrained in the his mind and body, and while a rational “warning voice” tells the singer to “wake up to reality” and walk away, just thinking about the person stops him from leaving. Despite knowing there is “no chance to win,” he chooses to “sacrifice anything” to keep this person near.

LYRICS

I’ve got you under my skin

I have got you, deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you’re really a part of me
I’ve got you under my skin

I’ve tried so not to give in
I have said to myself this affair it never will move so well
But why should I try to resist when baby I know damn well
That I’ve got you under my skin

I’d sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of a warning voice that comes in the night
And repeats, repeats in my ear

Don’t you know, you fool
You’re never gonna win
Use your mentality
Wake up to reality
And each time I do just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
‘Cause I’ve got you under my skin

I would sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of a warning voice comes in the night
And repeats how it screams in my ear

Don’t you know you fool
There’s no chance to win
Why not use your mentality
Wake up, step up to reality
And each time I, just the thought of you
Makes me stop just before I begin
Because I’ve got you under my skin
Yeah, I like you under my skin

LYRICS

I’m two shots shy of a 40 ounce quart
A hand in the pocket and a hand in your shorts
Shoot me with two and don’t be slow
You only got one good way to go

And get naked, buck naked
Buck naked, it’s the only way to go

Twenty six chicks, all tied in a knot
Ain’t all good, but it’s what we got

So get naked, buck naked
Let me see you naked, it’s the only way to go
Get naked just

Buck, buck

I was feelin’ so fine and things were lookin’ better
My baby said, “Maybe” and I said I’d let her

Get naked, buck naked
Let’s get naked, it’s the only way to go

Get naked, everybody get naked
Buck naked, it’s the onliest way to go
Get naked, get naked, get buck naked, yeah
