Written for dVerse Poetics – ‘Launch:
Light and Truth of Painting’. Our host,
Melissa, asks us to write a poem inspired
by one of the works of Henri Rousseau.
Below is the epitaph placed upon Rousseau’s tombstone, written by poet Guillaume Apollinaire and inscribed by sculptor Constantin Brâncusi:
“We salute you Gentle Rousseau you can hear us
Delaunay, his wife, Monsieur Queval and myself
Let our luggage pass duty free through the gates of heaven
We will bring you brushes, paints and canvas
That you may spend your sacred leisure in the
light and truth of painting
As you once did my portrait facing the stars, lion and the gypsy”

The grasses bend as one beneath the gale,
a thousand blades combed flat by unseen hands.
The sky has torn itself to strips of pale
white fire, stitched crooked over darkened lands.
And there, half-hidden where the gold stalks lean,
a shape emerges …. orange, black, and bright ….
its mouth pulled back on teeth not fully seen,
its eye a small sun burning through the night.
Is it the storm that makes the creature start,
or does the creature make the storm its own?
The leaves don’t know. They hold their breath, apart,
each vein and rib in perfect stillness shown.
The world tips sideways, wild and unresolved….
one held breath where beast and storm have dissolved.

A super superb sonnet my friend … I’ve written a few, but I seem to find them a difficult format … On a heartfelt musical note, here’s a song by Glen Hansard; his tragic death in Dublin yesterday is awfully sad news, Nancy

Yes, I read about this tragedy; what a terrible shame. My heart goes out to his family. Thank you for your wondrous words, my dear friend. They are most warmly appreciated, as is this emotional soundtrack. 💙😢🎶

You captured the storm beautifully in your poem, Nancy, with all the movement: the grasses bending and the gold stalks leaning, and the tiger ‘emerging’ from the chaos. I also like the slant allusion to Blake’s tiger, the ‘eye a small sun burning through the night’.

Thank you for this fabulous comment, Kim. For me to even be mentioned in the same paragraph as Blake’s masterful “Tyger, Tyger” is incredible! This is a wonderful challenge and I’m delighted to participate. 😊

Fabulous Nance – it’s a vivid, atmospheric piece – with great pace and rhythm. Love the mythical question – Is the beast a victim of the weather, or is he the cause of the chaos? Your piece of music is a perfect choice and one of my favourites I love Vivaldi 🩷

So pleased to know you enjoyed the mood of my piece, Ange; it was a fun writing experience. Vivaldi is a favorite of mine, too …. especially when played by 2CELLOS! Mille grazie! 🎻 🐅🤎
