Written for RDP, where Martha asks
us to get creative with the word “socks”.
Here’s a story from 2024; hope it tickles your toes!

The other night as I was getting undressed and ready for bed, I pulled off my sock and saw something on the sole that looked like a bit of fuzz or a piece of string but upon closer inspection I realized it was something imprinted on the bottom of the sock itself. Since I can’t see a thing without my glasses, I thought it was the letter A for the company name which is Ace USA but I soon found out it was the letter L, obviously for LEFT.
“What are the odds!” I declared to myself, rather tickled by the fact that I put the LEFT sock on my left foot without even checking the bottom of the sock, but when I took off the other sock, fully expecting to see the letter R indicating the RIGHT sock, I was confounded when I saw another L!
“Just my luck” I again proclaimed to myself, somewhat annoyed that I would be the one to get a defective pair of socks, with two LEFT socks and no RIGHT sock!
I promised myself that in the morning I would call Ace USA and encourage them to correct their oversight by sending me two RIGHT socks, one as a mate for one of the LEFT socks and the other as a mate for the other LEFT sock, leaving me with two perfectly functioning pairs of socks.
The next morning I called Ace USA, explained my problem to Eleanor in customer services and requested two RIGHT socks to match my two LEFT socks. Well, I’m sure you can imagine what a good laugh I had when Eleanor sweetly explained that the L on the bottom of my socks did not stand for LEFT but rather for LARGE.
Now I find myself rethinking that box in the front closet full of defective mittens.

So funny! For a minute I thought they might end up being some kind of ‘safety socks’! hehehehe

You mean like hospital socks with the non-skid pads on the bottom? Ugh … I hate those things! 😂

I can’t stop giggling my friend … here’s a ‘Left and Right’ poem from years ago …
My Lost Sock
I’m a hand knitted woollen sock.
Here’s my story from year dot.
In the beginning.
I started as a piece of spinning.
The wool off a sheep’s back.
An odd colour of brownie black.
Being spun into dark twines.
On a wheel from olden times.
Craftily hand knitted.
Lovingly, soon to be gifted.
There were two of us.
We were like knitted twins.
Righty and Lefty.
And of course, I’m Righty.
Our gorgeous red-haired spinner and knitter.
Had dutifully finished.
Cheerfully folded and wrapped.
In colourful paper and flower strap.
A fabulous Christmas present.
For her husband’s aged parent.
Soon it was Christmas day.
Everyone’s jolly, merry and gay.
Drinking red wine, local Cabernet.
Eating fish, caught in a nearby bay.
And presents opening time began.
Families smiled and sang.
We’re sitting on Pop’s lap.
Gently and slowly unwrapped.
Pop proudly exclaims and holds us up.
“Look here, see what I’ve got”.
Suddenly Pop throws Lefty into the corner.
And I’m left dangling like “Little Jack Horner”
There’s much laughter and jokes.
Kids come over and give me a friendly poke.
Poor discarded Lefty, on the floor with no folks.
While I’m up here being kindly stroked.
There are more giggles, they’re all staring at me.
Pop’s grinning from ear to ear.
Wriggling in his wheelchair to loud cheers.
At my discovery, Pop’s left leg’s missing below his knee.

Sounds like a pair of socks for Pop was redundant! Thanks for the poem share, my dear friend 🥰 🧦

Now for something that your story made sense to me. I have socks that actually do have an L and a R on them and are uncomfortable if I put the wrong lettered sock on the wrong foot 😁

Now that’s interesting! I’ve never heard of specific L/R socks; are they some sort of special orthopedic wear?

They aren’t anything special. Just low cut ankle sport socks. They are cushioned

This is a great story, and sure it made sense that L was for left. I’ll bet they get those calls all the time. 🙂
