Standing at the Glass

The city hides itself in haze today,
a hundred floors of fog and far-off light,
and he stands still, hands clasped, in quiet gray…
a suit of armor for an inner fight.

What weighs on him, no window glass can show:
the deals undone, the calls he didn’t take,
the years that passed in rooms much like below,
the quiet cost of every choice he’d make.

The chair sits empty, waiting, by the desk,
the papers stacked, the day not yet begun;
but here he pauses, lost in something more than work,
thoughts of the man he hoped he might become.
