Written for Living Poetry where
Bartholomew asks us to write
a poem with the theme ‘patient’.
Here’s where the prompt took me.
I waited for the kettle.
I waited for the bus.
I waited for my birthday
without too much of a fuss.
I waited in the checkout line,
I waited for my food,
I waited for a compliment
(still waiting …. oh, how rude).
They say that patience is a virtue,
the greatest gift, they boast.
But virtue won’t do much for you
when you’ve damn well burned the roast.
So here I sit, serenely calm,
a model of restraint…
slightly twitching on the inside,
but outwardly I’m a saint.
