Written for Sadje’s “What Do You See”.
Here’s where the image took me.

The cobblestones climb toward a crown of rock,
worn smooth by pilgrim feet and mountain wind,
while overhead the galaxy unlocks
its ancient light, a river without end.
What hands have traced this path through Portuguese stone,
not knowing that the stars would frame their trail?
The Milky Way arcs wide, a bridge of fire and bone,
where the earthly meets the bride’s celestial veil.
Below, the clouds swallow the valleys whole.
Above, ten thousand suns refuse to sleep.
And here …. this narrow seam between them both ….
a staircase dares the faithful soul to leap.
