The chandelier trembles, golden light
on dark water,
our table balanced between hunger
and thirst.
You reach around the wine glasses, fingers
just grazing mine
like a gondola finding
its mooring.

Branzino arrives in capers and white wine,
steaming;
the canal outside alive with salt and stone,
breathing
old facades, close together like lovers,
leaning.

We speak in half-sentences,
the silence heavy with desire.
Pedestrians on the bridge will never know
this particular interlude:
your mouth,
the flickering light,
tranquil Venetian waters
whispering breathless secrets
beneath us.
