Mairzy Doats

Geraldine the ewe wore her number with pride. Blue Six. Not Blue Four, not Blue Twelve …. Six. She’d been told it meant nothing, just a farmer’s tally, but Geraldine suspected otherwise.

Her twins, however, were less impressed.

“We want lunch,” announced the pink-eared one on the left.

“We want lunch NOW,” clarified the one on the right, whose ears were, if anything, even more pink.

Geraldine sighed the sigh of a sheep who has explained the concept of “in a minute” approximately four hundred times before noon.

In the distance, a darker sheep grazed quietly. Unbothered. Children content.

Geraldine watched her for a long moment.

“Must be nice,” she thought, wistfully.
