The Tide Keeper

Written for Sammi’s Weekend Writing Prompt
where she asks us to get creative in exactly
61 words using the prompt word ‘treasury’.
Here’s where the prompt took me.

Every evening, old Mae walked the shore of her hometown of Barnegat Bay, pockets heavy with whatever the sea surrendered.

A green bottle. A driftwood scrap shaped like an arrow. One brass button, salt-eaten.

Her grandchildren called her cottage cluttered. She called it a treasury.

“The ocean chooses what to keep,” she’d say, “and what to give away. So do I.”
