Written for Missy’s Mad Challenge #086.
The prompt appears below. Here’s my take.
The Prompt: Write about a moment that changed everything – but only describe the seconds before it happened.

It was around 2 AM and we had just crawled into bed. I was exhausted; I’d spent the day decorating the house for Christmas and had stayed up late waiting for my husband to get home from his office Christmas party. We talked for a little while, then called it a night. It was very late but I had no plans for the morning and knew I could sleep in. Bill gave me the best back rub and I was just about to doze off when I had the strongest urge to pee. It was a freezing cold night so I didn’t waste any time answering nature’s call. I hurried back to our bedroom and was about to get into bed when I suddenly wet myself, soaking the rug under my feet. What the hell? I just peed a minute ago! Then it hit me: my water had broken and I was going into labor!
Our first son was born 8 hours later and life as we knew it was never the same. Best Christmas present ever!

The word pregnancy contains your name, Nancy. A fetus grows inside a “bag of waters” called the amniotic sac during pregnancy. The amniotic sac is inside your uterus. It’s filled with a water-like fluid (called amniotic fluid) that protects the fetus. When the amniotic sac tears, amniotic fluid comes out of your vagina. This is your “water breaking,” and it’s a sign that delivery is right around the corner.

That’s a fact, Jim! When I was in school, we didn’t have Sex Ed; we had something called ‘Health Class’. Even though I knew what to expect, in the excitement of the moment, that all went out of my head. I called my obstetrician who told me to keep track of the contractions, then I called my sister-in-law who had a baby two months earlier. We talked for three hours and by the time we got to the hospital and got set up, I was ready to give birth! Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
