Our gracious host, Rochelle, is asking us to get
creative in 100 words or less using the photo
seen below. Welcome to Friday Fictioneers
This is where the prompt took me.

The glass door cleanly divided two worlds. Inside, warmth. Outside, something ancient was happening along the horizon …. fire that wasn’t fire, color that had no name, a sky silently yet dramatically unraveling its last hour.
The bare tree stood in the middle of it all, indifferent, its skeleton reaching upward like it had forgotten what leaves felt like.
Small lights dotted the landscape below, patient and attentive, keeping their modest vigil in the night. A wind chime twisted slowly, catching what remained of the fading light.
Nobody needed to be watching. The evening was doing this entirely for itself.

This is what the magic of writing is all about. Brilliant, Nancy! Things that seem so normal, every-day occurrences described in a way that makes them exciting, slightly threatening because of the unawareness of the ones safely in their homes. Perfect title, too.

Thanks very much, Gabi. I was struck by the beauty of Rochelle’s photo, definitely inspired to write about Mother Nature holding court. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Dear Nancy,
And the earth continues its rotation with total disregard for humanity. Lovely piece.

Nancy, I like your concluding spin on “if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there, does it make a sound?” (paraphrasing) You’re right, nature doesn’t care if you’re watching.
