Written for David’s Weave Written Weekly #195
where Marion asks us to write a Memento Poem.
I have chosen to write about the day my mother
surprised me with tickets to see The Beatles.
This is my Memento Poem. Thanks, Marion!

My mother looked into my eyes,
“Hurry now, get ready,
let’s go!”
Be still my heart! What a surprise!
Bright lights, feeling heady.
The show!
The Lads ran out, a group of four;
the best in all the land.
They sang,
we barely heard above the roar
“I Want To Hold Your Hand”.
Hearts rang!

Nancy’s Notes: Memento, created by Emily Romano, is a poem about a holiday, anniversary or memorable event, consisting of two stanzas as follows: 8 syllables for line one; 6 syllables for line two; and 2 syllables for line three. This is repeated twice for each stanza. The rhyme scheme is a/b/c/a/b/c for each of the two stanzas.

Just wanna let you know that our new W3, hosted by our beloved Svenja, is live until tomorrow:

I’m sorry for the delayed note – I’ve started a new job and my schedule is all over the place.

Nancy — this feels so alive to me. The way “Hurry now, get ready, let’s go!” turns into “we barely heard above the roar” captures that sudden shift from ordinary time into shared astonishment!

Thanks so very much, David! It’s true; the noise level was unlike anything I ever experienced, before or since, even at the loudest heavy metal concerts. It was relentless and didn’t stop for the duration of the show. We heard snatches of songs and that was enough for us. The joy and thrill of being in the same place at the same time with the Beatles was more than any of us in that arena could ever hope for. Someone needs to be a bona fide Beatlemaniac to truly grasp the reality of that phenomenon. That day was the most electrifying experience in my young life.

Nancy, I’m a touch envious that you got to see The Beatles in person!! Your Memento captures the excitement perfectly!

I can definitely understand that emotion! It was the chance of a lifetime; if my mother hadn’t gotten tickets, I probably never would have seen the Beatles. It’s a night I’ll never forget. Thank you!

My children’s Godfather is a big Beatles fan. He even wrote a book about the Beatles that was used as a text in a music history class. My sons were the only kids that had ever heard of the Beatles when they were in elementary school!

That’s amazing! Do you know if his book on line? How long ago was this?

Thanks Nancy. It was first published in 1984 and is still available. The book is a compilation of articles that appeared over the course of the Beatles group’s existence (prior to their breaking up). It was rereleased in 1991. https://www.amazon.com/Beatles-Reader-Selection-Contemporary-Remembrances/dp/1560750243

Michele, I never actually set out to “convert” my friends, but when that happens, it’s a real bonus! I’m delighted to know you’re enjoying the music of the Beatles. They have a varied and impressive collection of songs to choose from. Thank you, Michele. I hope you keep listening for a long time to come. 💛🪲🎶

How lovely! The first time I was the Beatles I hardly heard a note due to all the screaming!

Right?! The noise levels were astronomical but we didn’t care. Just being in the same place as the Beatles was enough for us. I do wish it could have been the Cavern Club, though; what a trip that would have been.

WOW … what a fabulous experience for a young lass, Nancy … I was fortunate enough to see the Rolling Stones, at the Kooyong Tennis Centre in 1973 … an afternoon outdoor concert in January, it was 39’C …
