AI: Yes Or No?

Written in response to Friday Faithfuls:
“AI Is Here”. Here’s my response.

In this week’s edition of Friday Faithfuls, Jim Adams is discussing Artificial Intelligence and how it impacts our lives on a personal level. Jim has provided us with many different options to write about; I have chosen the topic of AI use on my site.

My knowledge of and experience with AI is limited, at best. I saw some of my WordPress friends creating their own images to use with their stories or poems and I thought that was a great idea. After doing a little research and downloading a couple of apps, I was also able to create images for my writings. It’s great fun and gives me a sense of accomplishment, even though I haven’t drawn a single image by myself. Believe me, you don’t want to see my artwork; I can’t even draw a crooked line! I used to spend a lot of time searching online for the perfect images. With AI to help create my images, I’m no longer wasting time searching online. I also think my site looks more attractive with the images I create with the help of AI. In this regard, AI has been good for me.

For a few months, I was participating in a certain prompt group; it was an interesting group with intriguing prompts but a few weeks ago, the format was changed to AI-based. We were asked to use AI to write our stories, then explain the procedure we used. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the change but I figured I’d give it a chance. I wrote one story via AI and after that, I quit the group. I derived zero pleasure or satisfaction from having AI write my stories for me. There was no challenge and I felt like I was cheating. All my readers knew about this new format so it wasn’t like I was pulling the wool over anyone’s eyes. I just didn’t like the whole idea of it. While it’s true that I provided the plot, the story that was produced wasn’t “me”. That doesn’t mean it was bad; it just wasn’t the way I would write and it didn’t sound like me. In this regard, AI was not a good fit for me.

There are some people who say AI is evil and it’s going to take over the world. I’m sure there are many excellent applications for AI so I’m not going to dismiss it out of hand or be afraid of it. However, when it comes to writing stories, I’d rather do it myself. I’ve been told I’m a pretty storyteller, and that gives me a great sense of self-worth and satisfaction.

Thanks to Jim Adams for keeping us aware and on the ball. And thanks to you all for stopping by for a look and a listen.

That’s all she wrote, kids. See you on the flip side. 😎

  1. This is a really honest and grounded take.

Using AI as a tool for visuals and efficiency, but drawing a clear line when it comes to your voice and storytelling, feels both thoughtful and authentic. The part where you say the AI-written story wasn’t “you” really lands. Writing isn’t just output, it’s identity, process, and satisfaction.

AI helping without replacing the joy is probably the healthiest balance there is.

  2. AI saves me a lot of time in research, and on occasion I’ll use a chunk of something I generated in an explanation. I also generate a lot of the graphics I use on my page with AI. It’s a useful tool. Lately, though, I’ve seen a lot of poorly done videos on YouTube that you know weren’t created by a sentient human being but by people who bought a book with a name like “How To Make Many Moneys Making YouTube Videos With AI And Getting Rich Rich Rich.”

  3. I noticed your images ‘created by me and…’ but I have not a clue how to use AI. I use my own photos on my blog so I will not have AI taking over that! Don’t let AI write your stories, Nancy. I have no idea how that would work, but I so enjoy your writing.

  4. From looking at your picture, Nancy I have to agree that you are a pretty storyteller and besides that you do tell some damn good stories. AI is great for making pictures, but sometimes it will draw people with 3 legs because it doesn’t understand anatomy. I agree with you about 6the AI created stories taking the challenge away from writing and that is not for me either, as I only write stories that will challenge me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts today.

    1. You are too kind, Jim. Thank you very much. I’ve seen images with three legs and six fingers; it’s kind of funny how something so technologically advanced can still produce primitive results. You have to be very explicit when using AI for images. You can never provide too much information.

  5. I’m not sure where to find the place where you can ask AI to create a picture of what you want.

I like the deal that is like google or wiki, in that when I type in a question AI comes back with an answer and examples, etc right away.

Most times I can tell if someone has let AI write for them a story or poem. It has no spark, no humanness to it. Oh it’s a good story or poem, but it is not human, and I can tell.

    1. You gave an excellent description, Barbara, when you said there is “no spark, no humanness”; you’re absolutely right. I had no idea how to make my own images until I asked a couple of friends on WordPress and I got the names of apps I could download. Once you have the app, it’s easy. Thanks very much, Barbara.

  6. I’m with you. I love creating images for my site using AI because I can perfectly match colors using hex codes. My site isn’t the greatest, but I like feeling that it’s put together. lol

I hope you have a lovely New Year! 🩷🌺

  7. I really enjoyed the Conner Smith song, Nancy … and as for AI, I’m the same as you … I thoroughly enjoy the process of creating my own poem from go to whoa … I do use the ‘Co-pilot app’ to help me with punctuation (I am hopeless with any sort punctuation functions) and I’ve the Co-pilot help me with a few images 📖📘🥰🌏🎶🐶💕

    1. Now I just learned something new from you, dear Ivor! I had no idea Copilot could help with punctuation. I have not looked into it any further than helping me create images. I’m glad you have something that helps you with that pesky punctuation! 😂

So pleased to know you enjoyed today’s song; I thought it was a good fit. 🥰🎶
