Welcome back to the final month of 2025 at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag. Here is my group and their song for the third week of December.
Linkin Park formed in Agoura Hills, CA in 1996; they became a globally successful rock band known for pioneering nu-metal, blending rap and rock with electronic elements, especially with their 2000 blockbuster debut album, Hybrid Theory. Their lineup featured iconic vocalist Chester Bennington; known for his powerful vocals that blended singing and screaming, he helped the band achieve massive success. After his tragic death in 2017, the band paused, eventually returning in 2024 with new vocalist Emily Armstrong, continuing their influential legacy.
It was twenty-five years ago, December 15, 2000, that Linkin Park released “My December” … a beautiful ode to the month. Now in mid-December, the last month of 2025, its somber tones have grown even darker and more poignant.
Written by guitarist-singer Mike Shinoda while the band was on tour, it is one of Linkin Park’s most gentle songs, as it was intended for the Los Angeles radio station KROQ Christmas show and album. Shinoda said it was about being on the road and missing home, particularly during the holidays. But it has taken on more gravity over the years.
Sung mostly by the late Chester Bennington, it’s considered his story by many. Sadly, Bennington hanged himself in 2017; that tragedy lives on in this song and in the continuing line of sorrows. Chester’s suicide came on the birthday of his friend Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, who had hanged himself two months earlier. Bennington was devastated by, as he wrote, “a world without Chris”; he didn’t stay in it for long. All that sorrow is infused into this song, sung by Chester Bennington.

Yeah … I’m a great fan of Linkin Park’s music, thanks for sharing their “December” song … (my niece, April, who was born in June, had the nickname, “December”, back in her school days) …

There was a Linkin Park tribute band playing in my city at the beginning of December. My sister-in-law is a fan and had tickets for the gig but she didn’t go as she was to upset. Understandable I guess.

I know …. it’s just awful. I questioned whether I really wanted to go with this song during the holidays, but bad things don’t stop happening just because it’s Christmas. Thank you, Jim.

A sad tune. Musicians, artists, and writers all seem to be troubled in many ways. Creativity has a price, and it’s not always a good one.
