Written for David’s Weave Written Weekly #187
where Ange has prompted us to write a piece of
“musical poetry” inspired by the instrumental
guitar track, “Canción Triste” by Jesse Cook.
This is my response. Thanks, Ange & David!

Your absence plays me like a weeping guitar,
each string a nerve you left exposed to air,
a blues song thrumming from an ancient scar,
the minor key of life without you there.
I am percussion, my heart pounds against your ribs,
an ache, a steady rhythm keeping time
to all the ways your memory ad-libs
verses to our unfinished lover’s rhyme.
The cello of your voice still haunts the room,
that low vibrato woven through my hair,
I am the bow drawn slow across the gloom,
trembling to sounds that silence cannot share.
We were a symphony that broke apart mid-phrase;
now I’m just an echo, mourning amoroso days.

This is exceptional, my friend. Beautiful, lyrical, sensuous and with Jesse Cook playing in the background, perfection. I love him. Course, he’s Canadian, to boot!

Isn’t this just a fantastic piece of music? It’s sublime. Thank you, cara, for acknowledging the lyrical and sensual sides of my poem; that’s what I was aiming for and I’m happy to know that resonated with you. This was such a fun piece to create, as you can imagine.

Nancy, wow — this really got to me. That line “the cello of your voice still haunts the room” just… yeah, that one sticks. Such a beautiful, aching piece. Thanks for sharing it with us this week.

Thank you so much, David. This was a real treat for me and there was absolutely no way I was going to pass up the opportunity to write a “musical poem”! Thanks to Ange for the brilliant idea. I had so much fun letting my musical and writing imagination take over. So pleased to know you enjoyed it and found it relatable.

This is gorgeous. I have written one piece of musically driven poetry in my life- and just didn’t have it in me to try again for this prompt- here’s mine, an oldie- but I think a goodie….if you would like to have a look. https://violetslentz.home.blog/2025/09/02/un-intermezzo-2/

Thanks, Jodi. I really wanted an equal blend of sensuality and musicality and I feel like I achieve that. I read you a poem and thought it was “bellissimo”! Thank you for sharing the link. When we bleed on our pages, we know we created something special. ❤︎
