RDP Tuesday: illusion

Today at RDP, Martha Kennedy asks us to get
creative with the word ‘illusion’. Thanks, Martha!
Here’s where the prompt word took me.

Dazed and Confused

Christmas looms just one month out – an illusion, I’m quite sure,
For I haven’t bought a single gift or decked a single hall,
My tree’s still boxed, my lights are tangled (same as the year before),
And somehow thinking “plenty of time” is my greatest trick of all!

  1. We do a family Secret Santa, so there’s only one large present to be purchased! Far easier than buying lots of individual ones.

My decs go up Monday. I have a completely different theme each year, and I never let on in advance what it’ll be. I plan ahead too, so my 2006 is theme is already decided upon!

    1. That’s a great way to handle gift-giving, dear Keith. Our three older grandkids are at that age where all they want is money or gift cards. I always like to give a physical gift but teenagers are difficult to figure out. I remember, I think it was last year, when you posted photos of your holiday placemats. I love that you do a different theme every year. I just wonder where you store everything!

      1. Yeah, well… you’re you 😉
I actually have a few Christmas presents done – which for me, is way ahead of the game! So glad our Thanskgiving is smartly in October instead of so close to Christmas.

        1. I got into the habit of early Christmas shopping in October 1977 when I was very pregnant and still had two months to go. The thought of going Christmas shopping paralyzed me. Now, this is before we had shopping online, so I grabbed my handy dandy Sears catalog and did all my shopping on the phone with a real live person. And that’s the way it’s been since then …. sans the human on the other end of the phone. Both our sons were born between Thanksgiving and Christmas so add that to the mix and you got yourself a couple of insane months. It’s all about self-preservation.

          1. I ain’t judging my friend! I kinda like that the last couple of years I have gotten a tad ahead. Still awaiting my kids’ suggestions. Two of mine were spring babies and the last one an October one so, I don’t have the same sense of “oh my god!!” as you did 🙂
I so miss the Sears catalogue.
I hate shopping through Amazon but damn if they don’t usually have the best prices. Not that I am a fan of shopping but I do like to go out and see stuff, too.

            1. You are judging! I can feel your eyes burning in the back of my head! Lol and you know, I’m just kidding! 🔥👀 🔥

The trouble I have with going out and looking at all the nice things (besides having to deal with people!) is I end up buying more than I need because everything is so tempting. When I’m online shopping, I make a list and I buy what’s on that list. Period. Nothing extra. Keeps me from going crazy with the credit card!

              1. The hell I am!! And I know you are…. right? RIGHT?

Yes, there is always that. I have a tendency to overspend on line! But no, definitely not shopping with the crush of people. That’s when I hate that I am back at a job. I was off for so long that I took a liking to the freedom of going when I feel like it and not after work and oh help me gawd, not on weekends!

  2. Got all the decor up last week: small tree, lights outside on the fence, a few spot lights illuminating the trees, chili pepper lights in the houses, all the little things setting around, Nativity Scene set up, our 1950s era plastic lit Santa Claus and Candles on the front porch, feeding area for the Opossums, Skunks and Raccoons set up, bird feeders relocated. I’m worn out, and say every year this is the last, but we keep on doing it. This may really be the last gasp year; too old, and can’t bend down anymore.

    1. That sounds like a lot to me, Phil. I’m exhausted just reading it! We used to put up a lot more than we do now. Isn’t that the case with all old farts? Every year we say it’s the last year and every year we put something up. A couple of years ago we got a spotlight which we secure to a tree in the front lawn. When you plug it in, the whole house is covered in tiny white lights. It’s like wearing a twinkling muumuu gown! Mr. Bill will put the lit wreath on the front door, some colored lights on the front railing and our 1950s era plastic lit Santa Claus with lantern. Quick and easy Christmas tree inside with my Nutcracker collection around the fireplace. That’s enough and I’m quite content with it. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Momo. Take good care, my friend.

      1. Yours sounds nice, and the way to go. We had Thanksgiving with Momo oldest daughter and her family yesterday since they will be our of town on TGD. My son and some of their friends are coming to Dallas for the Cowboy VS Chiefs game and we are going to see Momos brother who is confined to a nursing home, then come home and watch Dallas get their butts handed to them. We have kids all over the place so we are lucky to get one of them here. Happy Thanksgiving to ya’ll too. I’m impressed that you also have an old plastic Santa, now all we need is an aluminum tree and the rotating light.

  3. I enjoyed Joe Walsh’s song … and I’m a lucky guy, I get to spend Christmas away at my sister’s place, where life is easy for me and Frankie, and “Time Hears No Sound” … I think you’ll like this heartwarming music/video, Nancy …

      1. Syml’s version is delightful and the video was emotionally compelling for me … I’ve just couple with an incoming post/senryu … a sentimental piece that I will post sooner or later 📖💕
