Maintaining The Peace

This is a true story. My Uncle Paolo was a member of the Polizia di Stato, the national police force of Italy and Sicily. He was proud of his position on the force, a job he had for about two years prior to getting married. His girlfriend, Enza, was the worrisome sort and kept pleading with him to quit his job …. something my uncle was unwilling to do. A few months into their marriage, Enza became pregnant and was even more worried about her husband’s safety as a cop. Uncle Paolo tried to convince Enza not to worry; all his time with the police force, he never faced anything dangerous and never had to discharge his gun. After their baby was born, Enza begged Paolo to quit the force; for his wife’s peace of mind and for their new baby, he reluctantly agreed. Having been a barber before becoming a cop, Uncle Paolo got a job in the local barbershop. The first day at his new job, a jealous husband with a vendetta against Paolo’s boss barged into the shop and shot the boss dead. He then turned the gun on my Uncle Paolo and shot him. Fortunately, Paolo only sustained an injury to his shoulder. After he was fully recuperated, Uncle Paolo rejoined the police force and Enza never complained about his job again.

    1. It really is something else and it’s all true! That, however, is not my uncle; the events in my story happened when I was a child so Uncle Paolo is long gone. I thought the fellow in that picture had a nice face and he reminds me of my father! Thanks, Ange.
