Today at RDP, leapingtoes asks us to get
creative with the word ‘parallel’. Thanks, Toes!
Here’s where the prompt word took me.
Head First!

Our daughter-in-law, Dawn, moved up from Florida to NYC 22 years ago; shortly after that, she met our son, Will, and the rest is history. In all the years Dawn was living in Florida, she never learned how to parallel park; apparently, it’s not what people do down South. Moving up to New York was a huge culture shock for Dawn when she discovered all street parking in Manhattan is parallel parking. She couldn’t do it and would drive around the streets near her apartment in SoHo looking for a spot large enough for her to drive into head first! Sometimes she’d end up driving around for more than an hour looking for a spot, often having to settle on a nearby municipal lot. Fast-forward 22 years and Dawn still will not attempt to parallel park; it is a true phobia for her. Meanwhile, Will and Dawn’s 16-year-old daughter, Mckenna (our first grandchild) successfully parallel parked on her very first driving lesson. Look, Mom …. it’s easy!

haha For some, yes. Although I passed that part of the driver’s test many moons ago, I believe the parking spaces have gotten smaller. 😂 My daughter on the other hand, can pp blindfolded with one hand. 🤣

My daughter has difficulty parallel parking. When she came to see me once she said ‘Dad, I just parked perfectly and there was noone there to witness it’!

Hahaha! She should have snapped a pic as proof! Great story, dear Keith. Thanks!

I can’t parallel park either. I was lucky that the state where I took my driver’s test did not require it, and even luckier that I now live someplace where it’s never been necessary. 🙂

I had no idea so many people can’t parallel park! My DIL will be happy knowing she’s not alone in this! ✊🏼

It’s all a matter of practice …. and getting your car lined up right!

I feel your daughter-in-law’s pain. I moved from New Jersey down here to Florida. **do these people even know how to drive??!!** 😂

Hahaha!! No matter what anyone says, drivers from the Tri-State area are still the best!
Thanks, Lois.

I’ve never driven on a road Nancy, …my brother let me drive his car in a muddy field once, with him changing the gears , …I know, it doesn’t count, …but I’d be the same as Dawn, …I think, …💙

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Penn. I was a late bloomer and didn’t get my license until I was in my 20s. I always had someone to drive me wherever I wanted to go and there was public transportation which I rode to school and work. It was only after we were married and decided to have children that I knew it was time to get my license. It was wonderful being so independent! I love to drive and do all the driving when Bill and I are out and about.

Yes that parallel parking can be tricky – it’s all we really have here, I once surprised my self, I was in a rush and could only see one spot on the street so I zoomed in and in one go snuck in perfectly – not really thinking too much about it – it was only when I got out did I see what a tight spot I had managed to squeeze into – I had to take a photo – I knew my hubby would never believe me 😄

Yes, a photo can’t be refuted! I see people driving ginormous SUVs and think it must be very difficult for them to find a parking spot. Each new car I get is smaller than the one before it! Thanks, Ange.

I have had very few occasions in my life to parallel park- so I will admit- the few times I had to I waved down a stranger and had them do it for me! hehehehe

Hahaha! You’re lucky they didn’t drive off with your car!

Your daughter-in-law needs one of those self-parking cars.

Maybe so. I wouldn’t want that for myself. I like being in control of my own car; I hardly ever use cruise control.
