A Fading Echo

Written for Sunday Whirl Wordle – #731. Our
host is Brenda Warren and these are our words:
rooted, years, footsteps, creaks, look, stir,
hour, loop, clock, echo, before, and slips.
Here’s where the prompts took me.

The old house creaked as I climbed the worn stairs, my footsteps echoing through empty halls. For years, I’d avoided this place, rooted in childhood fear. But the clock was ticking …. I had an hour before the auction. I stirred dust with each step, memories rising like ghosts. Before Gran died, she’d whispered about something hidden, her voice a fading echo. Look where time slips”, she’d said. In her bedroom, the grandfather clock stood silent. I ran my fingers along its base and felt it …. a loop of metal, a hidden latch. One tug and the panel swung open! Inside lay a weathered leather journal, its pages yellow with age. The first entry stopped my breath: “To whoever finds this, I’m sorry for what I’ve done.”
