November Blue

This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my November artists and their song.

The Avett Brothers are an American folk-rock band formed by brothers Scott and Seth Avett from Concord, North Carolina. The band officially began when they merged their childhood rock bands, Nemo and Margo, in the late 1990s. Along with core members Bob Crawford and Joe Kwon, their music blends a variety of genres, including bluegrass, country, pop, folk, punk, and rock; they are known for their intense, soulful live performances.

The brothers’ musical talent was nurtured by family roots: their father is a guitarist and their grandmother is a concert pianist. This background inspired their love for music from a young age. The band’s journey began in smaller venues, but they grew to become a major act, playing for tens of thousands of fans at large concerts. The band has released 19 albums, with some notable works including Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions and True Sadness, their ninth studio album, reaching #3 on the US Billboard charts.

The song “November Blue” appeared on the band’s first official full-length album, Country Was, in 2002. It was an early recording, reflecting the band’s initial raw, unproduced, and vulnerable sound. A true heartbreaker, it is a poignant love song that explores themes of love found and lost, memories, and the pain of moving on. It is considered a strong example of a recurring theme in the Avett Brothers’ music: the acceptance of life’s occurrences and the importance of persevering through the varied experiences of ups and downs, gains and losses. Despite its early, raw production, “November Blue” has remained a fan favorite and is often requested at live shows.

LYRICS

And if I weren’t leavin’,
Would I catch you dreamin’
And if I weren’t gonna be gone now,
Could I take you home

And if I told you I love you,
Would it change what you see
And if I was staying,
Would you stay with me

And if I had money,
Would it all look good
And if I had a job now,
Like a good man should

And if I came to you tomorrow,
And said “let’s run away”
Would you roll like the wind does,
Baby would you stay

My heart is dancin’,
To a November tune
And I hope that you hear it,
Singing songs about you

And I sing songs of sorrow,
Because you’re not around
See, babe I’m gone tomorrow,
Baby follow me down

And I don’t know why I have to,
But this man must move on
I love my time here,
Didn’t know ’til I was gone

November shadows, shade November change
November spells sweet memory, the season blue remains
November spells sweet memory, the season blue remains

Your yellow hair is like the sunlight,
However sweet it shines
Bit by the cold of December,
I’m warm beside your smile

Oh lady tell me I’m not leaving,
You’re everything I dream
I’m killing myself thinking,
I’ve fallen like the leaves
I’m killing myself thinking,
I’ve fallen like the leaves

  1. Nice find, Nancy and although the singer comes off as being a bit nasally, I really enjoyed this song. The phrase, “And if I” is used to start a conditional sentence, where the rest of the sentence describes what would happen if a certain condition were met.
