RDP Saturday: haze

Today at RDP, Punam has asked us to share a story,
poem, photo, painting, essay, etc., focusing on
the word ‘haze’. Thanks, Punam! Here’s my take.

Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em

Purple Haze is a sativa marijuana strain popularized by Jimi Hendrix’s 1967 classic song of the same name. This strain delivers a dreamy burst of euphoria and high energy cerebral stimulation, awakening creativity and blissful contentment. It has a mix of sweet and earthy flavors underscored by notes of berry and sharp spice.

“’Scuse me while I kiss this guy” aren’t the only mis-heard lyrics from Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”. If you think you’ve been singing the wrong words at the top of your lungs …. and let’s get real, who hasn’t? ….  here they are …. even the spoken words which became intelligible only by wearing headphones. Raise the volume and enjoy. Smoke ’em if you got ’em.

  1. Well, I thought it was acid too, so we learn something every day. I remember having an argument with a girlfriend playing the record. I definitely heard ‘kiss the sky’ but she was determined it was ‘kiss this guy.’ I think with phrases like this in lyrics, it’s how you hear it the first time, then nothing else will stop the track in your brain. Now, as for all those Elton John lyrics…

    1. It wasn’t too long ago when I had the chance to read the lyrics to a certain song; I was stunned to realize I’d been hearing/singing the wrong words all along! Of course, once I knew the right ones it made perfect sense. 😂 Your explanation is spot on and it’s always a revelation when we hear the right words for the first time. Thanks, D.

  2. Nancy… growing up I played in bands and was around musicians. I never smoked pot in my life…not because I didn’t want to but I just cannot inhale anything in my lungs…I hate it. But with gummies now…hmmm…different story! I didn’t know that Purple Haze was a strain of pot….I was thinking acid…but this makes sense.

  3. Hendrix explained that the idea for the words came to him in a dream after he had read the science fiction novel “Night of Light” by Philip José Farmer.  In the story, once every seven years, a planet orbiting a distant sun is inundated in a mysterious radiation that causes the fabric of reality to morph and distort.  Statues come to life.  People turn into trees.  Perception becomes a frightening, chaotic kaleidoscope.  At one point in the story, the sunspots visible from an alien planet are described as having a “purplish haze.”  Jimi said that after reading this book, he had a dream about walking under the sea in a plume of purple haze with no way out.  It was a traumatic experience, but in his dream his faith in Jesus saved him.  The song was originally titled ‘Purple Haze-Jesus Saves’.
