⌘ Rest in Peace, Trent McDonald, Friday Fictioneers ⌘
Written for Friday Fictioneers, where our host Rochelle
encourages us to be creative by writing a story in
100 words or less using the photo prompt below.
Also for Esther’s Word Prompt which is ‘edge’.
Here’s where the photo prompt took me.

People seem to go missing around Halloween, vanishing into thin air in broad daylight, leaving no trace behind. One moment they are present, the next they are gone. Panic spreads like wildfire. People are in disbelief. No one knows how this could happen, and fear hangs heavy in the air. The authorities are baffled, unable to explain the mystifying disappearance. Some whisper of supernatural forces at work while others suspect foul play. As the sun sets on another day, anxious families remain on edge, haunted by long sleepless nights. It’s a case of “now you see them, now you don’t”.

Dear Nancy,
Mysterious and just a bit creepy. Leave it to you to find the perfect music to go with your story.

Thank you, Rochelle! It’s a relief to put Halloween behind us. Time to get ourselves psyched for the upcoming holidays.
Thanks again. I’d rather have no music than lousy music!

I think the fear of disappearing without a trace or explanation is a visceral fear, the fear of being abandoned in a dangerous and wild environment perhaps. Great stuff for a spooky story.
Third try to comment, WP is driving me insane again. One day I’ll be disappeared without a trace. 😉

Thanks, Gabi! WordPress is always up to some tom-foolery and we’re at their mercy. Something about that stinks!

I don’t know where this place is, but I hope I don’t move there. “Disappeared” people makes my spine crawl whether in truth or fiction. Nicely done. (I might not sleep tonight.)

Thank you, Alicia. Sad to say, people go missing every bay, either by choice, a deadly accident or foul play. We knew someone who disappeared on his way to a client’s house to make a delivery. Somewhere along the way, he vanished and was never seen again, not even a trace. Sorry. I hope you can sleep tonight.

I know! Just this week a skeleton was found by a man doing maintenance beside the freeway near the grocery store where we shop. What the heck!

I blame the magicians using their illusions for all of the people that are disappearing.

What an interesting song- I have heard of Halsey, but this may be the first time I have listened to one of her songs. It accompanied your Halloween story perfectly.

I don’t know any of her work but when I found this song there was no need to keep looking. Thanks!

That’s the word, Destiny …. haunted. I knew a family whose adult son went missing while delivering a piece of jewelry to a customer (they owned a jewelry store). No trace of him anywhere, no clues. That was 50+ years ago and they never found a thing.
