Update on ‘Cyster’: AKA ‘The Lump’

My Hand, My Lump, My Photo Β© NAR

This past Wednesday I had an appointment with the rheumatologist to go over the results of my bloodwork. The good new is I do not have rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Sjogren’s Syndrome, Lupus, or Lyme disease. According to the doctor, I’m an extremely healthy woman who could be running marathons were it not for my osteoarthritis. Ha! I don’t think so!

The bad news is the rheumatologist was hoping the blood tests would give us a clue as to what is causing the lump; there were no clues and we still do not know what we’re dealing with. It’s crazy, isn’t it? Everything we have tried has failed, including physical therapy, two rounds of prednisone and a cortisone shot directly into the lump. An ultrasound, X-rays and an MRI were of little help. It’s not in my head; it’s in my hand! Just look at the photo.

I’m going back to the hand doctor on Wednesday to discuss our next move, which is to get this lump out of my wrist. That likely means some sort of surgical procedure. I’m not jonesing for surgery on my wrist, but letting ‘Cyster’ get any bigger is not an option. While the lump itself doesn’t hurt, the surrounding area and sides of my wrist are causing me pain, my hand is inflamed and my pinky and ring fingers are doing wonky things. At times my hand feels like it’s being strangled.

I’m going to make a prediction. As I told the hand doctor back in June, this all started when I bent my hand at the wrist, heard a pop and felt a sharp pain. My daughter-in-law was there and she also heard the pop. I believe it’s a tendon injury, which often results in the formation of a ganglion cyst. I think ‘Cyster’ is indeed a cyst, even though the hand doctor said it is not. We shall see. After all, I’m not a doctor; I just play one on WordPress.

Peace out. ✌🏼

See you on the flip side, my friends. 😎

  2. Wow, you would think in this day and age they could remove this quickly and painlessly. I read a comment about slamming it with a book, The pain of it bursting would hurt it seems and then could it come back worse? Hopefully you will find the solution soon but in the meantime the purple around it matches your nails pretty well. πŸ™πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈπŸ§‘

    1. Love your positive spin on things, Ernie! I’m with you about removing this thing quickly and painlessly. I’ve watched enough Dr Pimple Popper to know when a cyst is removed, it’s imperative that the sac be removed as well or else the cyst will definitely come back …. just another reason to pass on the heavy book idea! Thanks for your encouragement and good wishes. πŸ’œ

  3. Sorry for your pain, and they delay in proper treatment. Since June? Bah humbug!

I had a friend in high-school who got ganglion cysts in her wrist (in her case, she had a very traumatizing home life, and would sit for hours, knees to one side, rocking & listening to records). She said the doctor just smashed the cyst with a heavy book and it went away. Of course, the trauma did not go away and the cysts would come back. Then she graduated, moved across the country, and took up surfing and kickboxing (instead). Ah, medical arts in the 70’s. Still…

    1. Thanks, Liz. The delays are making me crazy. I’ve heard about that unorthodox treatment; I’d probably pass out if someone smashed my wrist with a heavy book.
That’s quite a story about your high school friend. A very dear friend of mine has Parkinson’s and she does kickboxing twice a week. She loves it. There’s specific kickboxing therapy for Parkinson’s and it’s helped her a lot.

  4. Glad to have ruled out the RA part. I think I had one of these, though not as large or severe one time. Right on the right wrist, after bending my hand the wrong way. I never went to a Dr. and it never really hurt, but it stayed a long time, then finally I noticed it was gone. Hope your next appt. will give an answer or a solution. πŸ™‚

  5. I am definitely on team cyst! Sometimes I think Doctors are just so hell bent on finding an exotic diagnosis- they fail to see what is right in front of them. Or maybe they just make a percentage off all of the tests they prescribe…..

    1. One of the things that really pisses me off is I’ve had this lump since June and I’ve been making the same claims since then. Now the lump has gotten larger and it feels like so much time has been wasted doing diddly squat. I’m resentful and I need this thing gone! Thanks for your thoughts, Jodi.

  6. I’m so relieved it’s nothing serious, Nancy β€” what a weight off your mind. ❀️ I hope you’re able to get it sorted soon and start feeling comfortable again. Thinking of you and sending care your way.

    Much love,
    David

      1. And I needed a good laugh too … it was a rainy day here and I’ve been stuck inside all day working on my manuscript … probably 10 hours worth, and now I must rest, so I’ll be ready for tomorrows onslaught πŸ“–πŸ“˜πŸŒπŸ˜πŸ’•

  7. My daughter has these lumps but I cannot remember the name. She has monthly injections to reduce the size and pain. It is a sort of rheumatoid arthritis. I carry the gene responsible but m not affected. makes me sad for my daughter that I am sort of responsible.

    1. Oh, dear Brian. I am sorry to her about your daughter’s condition and your sadness over feeling responsible. It’s difficult as parents not to think that way, isn’t it? RA has been ruled out for me and injections don’t work so it’s time to get really serious with The Lump. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
