This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song which
mentions the current month in the title or lyrics.
Here’s my October artist and his song.

Singer-songwriter, musician and record producer extraordinaire, Stevie Wonder is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Wonder is credited as a pioneer and influence by musicians across a range of genres that include R&B, pop, soul, gospel, funk, and jazz. A virtual one-man-band, Stevie Wonder’s use of synthesizers and other electronic musical instruments reshaped the conventions of contemporary R&B. He also helped drive such genres into the album era, crafting his LPs as cohesive and consistent, in addition to socially conscious statements. Blind since shortly after his birth, Wonder was a child prodigy who signed with Motown’s Tamla label at the age of 11, where he was given the professional name Little Stevie Wonder. The song I have chosen this week is “Summer Soft”. If you could create a song that encompasses the calm excitement of watching nature while at the park, that song would be Stevie Wonder’s “Summer Soft”. It’s a cathartic epic about life and loss, using the changing seasons as a metaphorical backdrop. Wonder’s 1976 album Songs In The Key of Life was a blockbuster full of massive hits. “Summer Soft” is a song not as broadly beloved as classics such as “Isn’t She Lovely”, yet it’s a perfect example of the brilliance that made Key of Life such an essential, defining piece of work. The song’s transition through various musical movements feels like its own event, one that could stand alone in the world, independent from the bigger musical project. “Summer Soft” reminds me that nothing is fixed, and living in the present moment is the only way to truly create beauty out of the life we have been given.
This is “Summer Soft” by Stevie Wonder
