RDP Monday: mesh

Today at RDP, we are asked to share a story,
poem, photo, painting, essay, etc., focusing
on the word ‘mesh
. Here’s my take.

In the mid-60s, when I first started wearing stockings, they were made of a fine mesh and held up by garters dangling from a garter belt around my waist. My mother taught me to first put on the garter belt, then carefully fit the stocking over my foot and gently pull it up the leg and attach the garter clips to the stocking tops, making sure they were smooth and not twisted. The garter straps could be adjusted for a comfortable, snug fit. Lastly, I would put my underwear over the stockings and garter belt.

  1. Oh, this brought back memories! I never wore anything sexy like a garter belt when I was a girl or teenager, but I did wear tights and pantyhose when I was a little bit older. My goodness, I wore pantyhose probably into my forties. Ridiculous things. Across the ages, dress has become more casual, and I’m glad.

        1. I attended a small Lutheran school for 12 years and wore a uniform …. 2 skirts, one red, blue & gray plaid and one solid blue, white blouse and red blazer and/or sweater. I loved wearing a uniform …. no thinking about getting dressed and no fashion peer pressure.

  2. Bygone days. I can remember my sister fighting with stockings until tights came along. I never wore either, not even for the bank heists.

Kind of you to give us that photo of yourself as the header 😉

      1. That’s the impression I got too. Tights were the bane of a young man’s love life, and useless for robberies unless you went with a mate 🤣

Looking forward to the photo 😉

  3. I wore them once and felt they were forever hanging down to my knees. Tights were a godsend, and very acceptable Christmas gift as a teenager! American Tan (remind you of anyone). I haven’t worn tights for over twenty years and progressed to longer skirts and pop socks for the office!

      1. I wear joggers and tees. I have two pairs of jeans but rarely wear them, and two tidy pairs of trousers, one of which is too baggy in all the wrong places but I haven’t got round to sorting things out for charity yet.

  4. What a palaver I remember my mum having stockings – thankfully tights came in before I started wearing them – they are enough of a pain – I haven’t worn them for about 15 years! OH and ZZ Top are top banana 🍌😄

    1. Honestly, I can’t stand either but pantyhose were infinitely easier …. unless we bought a pair that turned out to be too tight and difficult to put on. Then we’d have to break out the WD40! 😂 I haven’t worn either in years and I don’t miss them at all!

  5. That’s engineering for you!

My mom showed me a similar get-up for when Mrs Murphy came to visit (monthly). So uncomfortable, ungainly & awkward. So glad when engineering alleviated some of that. 🤓😳
