RDP Sunday: valley

Today at RDP, drkottaway asks us to share a
story, poem, photo, painting, essay, etc.,
centered on the word ‘valley
. Here’s my take.

When I was a very young child, I loved the delicate beauty of the Lily of the Valley; the low-growing plants with their tiny bell flowers were just right for my height. I pulled out one small plant and brought it back to my mother. She put it in an old jelly jar and placed it in the center of our table. It looked beautiful but achingly fragile and out of place. I never picked another Lily of the Valley, preferring to see them together in my garden. I still love them. They are the essence of innocence and perfection. Have a happy day, my friends!

Tiny bells of white,
Hanging low and shy,
Lily of the valley,
A sweet perfume drifts by.

Green leaves cradle them,
Protecting from the sun,
A little hidden garden,
Where spring has just begun.

So small and delicate,
A quiet, gentle grace,
A woodland fairy’s treasure,
In a secret, leafy place.

  1. I love thos flowers, though they populate gardens like rud we weeds. As a kid, it was a treat to drop their stems in different colored water and watch pure white become striped, as they drank.
