The Vicar

Our gracious host, Rochelle, encourages us
to be creative by writing a story in 100 words
or less using the photo prompt below. This is

The bishop slumped, shrouded in memories. Thirty-five years ago he had an affair with Evelyn Rogers; he was a parish vicar, she a parishioner. She became pregnant and he angrily rebuffed her. Two weeks later, he received a note from Evelyn saying she’d left town to have an abortion. He neither saw nor thought of her again – until last week. Evelyn had died. Her funeral was that morning at her one-time parish; the bishop officiated. Nobody came except a woman with three small girls. One girl looked up and grinned at the bishop; her smile was the image of Evelyn’s.

    1. That’s correct! The people in the church are Evelyn’s (and the vicar’s) daughter and granddaughters. I’m sure the vicar had no idea.

This is also one of my favorite songs and album covers. After all these years, the Beatles continue to inspire me.

      Thank you, Rochelle. Shalom
