Neon Gods

Written for dVerse Poetics: It’s Noisy In Here!
Our host, Mish, is asking us to write a poem
of any style dealing with noise. Here’s mine.

The screen hums low, a constant glow,
All day, all night, the stories flow.
A voice explains, a picture screams,
Of far-off lands and broken dreams.

The radio drones, a steady beat,
With headlines harsh, the summertime heat.
Each tragedy, a hurried word,
Another crisis to be heard.

The quiet room, it disappears,
Drowned out by worries, fed by fears.
No space to think, no time to rest,
Just endless news, put to the test.

The mind grows tired, the heart feels strained,
By echoes of a world profaned.
A silent plea begins to rise,
To turn it off, and close our eyes.

  1. Excellent, my friend. The noise is endless, isn’t it? We are forced to turn it off or get sucked in. I particularly loved this stanza:

    The quiet room, it disappears,
Drowned out by worries, fed by fears.
No space to think, no time to rest,
Just endless news, put to the test.

  2. In these times, there is so much real life drama to keep up with but the extra noise of opinions, so called analytics, arguments from news casters, it is over the top and so unnecessary. Canadian news tends to stick more to the facts but even ours veers off the tracks sometimes. I like the way you’ve captured the heaviness of media noise in your poem with ” Drowned out by worries, fed by fears. No space to think, no time to rest”.

    1. Yes, I agree, Mish. I realize the news anchors are paid to project a certain climate, especially the news programs with five or six anchors loudly exchanging opinions at the same time. It’s fever-pitch fear mongering …. and to what end? I’m very tired of the news being sensationalized, super-sized, itemized and externalized to the point of people being terrorized!

Thanks very much, Mish. I greatly appreciate your comments.

    1. Thanks so much, Jim. Very appreciative.
That’s a kooky song from the 80s which I thought of immediately. It’s never played so I though it would be fun to hear again. The name of my poem is from the lyrics to S&G’s Sound Of Silence which I could have used as well.

    1. Thanks a lot, Ernie; not sure if it’s wisdom so much as frustration but I greatly appreciate the comment.
That song is from the early 80s; I haven’t heard it in forever but it was the first song I thought of when writing this poem. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

      Happy Wednesday, Dawg!

    1. It’s not childish, Lisa; it’s self-preservation. The new reporters have turned reporting the news into a zoo with their constant jabber and yelling. Many of them love to stir up the hornet’s nest that get’s the viewers riled up, aggravated and frightened. If I watch the news, I want to be informed, not terrified or frustrated. I stay informed by reading the news online.

Thanks for your comment, Lisa. Many feel the same as you do, myself included.

    1. It’s very true. I have friends like that also and one is rather deaf so the TV is blaring and the people in the house are shouting over the TV. It’s a circus! Sad to say but my visits to her house are few and far between. Thanks for a great comment.
