This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my featured August artist and their song.

Rilo Kiley was an influential American indie rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1998, fronted by former child actors Jenny Lewis (vocals) and Blake Sennett (guitar, vocals). They released their self-titled debut EP, later reissued as The Initial Friend in 1999, followed by their first full-length album, Take-Offs and Landings in 2001. After releasing several EPs and albums on independent labels, the band signed with a major label and gained mainstream success before disbanding in 2011, though they reunited for a tour this year. The band was known for its blend of indie pop, folk, country, and chamber pop, reflecting themes of youth, romance, and disillusionment.
My featured song today is “August” from Rilo Kiley’s 2001 album, Take-Offs and Landings. The song’s narrator characterizes the month of August as an untrustworthy, indecisive individual. While the narrator attempts to stand by their side, nothing becomes of the relationship as August continues to make empty promises. Colloquially, the song can also be interpreted as a summer love where promises were made but ultimately broken.
This is “August” by Rilo Kiley
LYRICS
August, I’ll see you soon
Under yellow moons
Where I’ll gather what’s left of you
And August, I’m on your side
Or did I speak too soon?
Now we cross the great divide
Someday we’ll meet beyond the stars
And it’ll be
Away from here
Someday we’ll meet beyond the time and the bars
And it’ll be
Away from here
August, August of last year
Before the leaves disappeared
Told me you were not the one
August, something in your eyes
Or was it that you lied?
Told me not to take it to heart
Someday we’ll meet beyond the stars
And it’ll be
Away from here
Someday we’ll meet beyond the limits of who we are
And it’ll be
Away from here
Someday we’ll meet beyond the stars
And it’ll be
Away from here
Someday we’ll meet beyond the land that you call
Miles away
Away from here

This was a new one on me- I even googled her child acting jobs but still have no clue who she is – interesting song though. Thanks, Nancy.

An unknown one for me too Nancy, … August seems unpredictable, … and I’m not surprised it’s my birth month, …💙
