This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my featured August artist and his song.

American country music singer and songwriter Ryan Hurd from Kalamazoo, Michigan initially made a name for himself as a songwriter by composing hits for prominent country artists. He transitioned to a solo career, achieving success with his own singles like “To A T” and the duet “Chasing After You” with Maren Morris, whom he later married. Hurd’s music is characterized by a blend of modern country and heartfelt, relatable storytelling.
Ryan Hurd is a rough-cut romantic. He embodies the new masculine …. simultaneously amiable and focused, respectful and edgy, commanding and supportive. There’s a lot of complexity wrapped up in Hurd, who’s balanced his budding recording career with a songwriting portfolio that includes hits by Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Lady A and more.
“June, July, August” is a song on Ryan Hurd’s 2021 debut album, Pelago. It was originally released as a promotional single in August 2021, prior to the album’s release. Hurd co-wrote the song with Zach Crowell and Chase McGill, the same team he collaborated with on two of Luke Bryan’s hits.
The song is a nostalgic reflection on a summertime romance and captures the bittersweet feeling of looking back on those three months as autumn approaches. It evokes vivid imagery of summer with mention of Kenny Chesney, hotel pools, working at a chair rental job, and enjoying drinks by the beach. Hurd described the song as perfectly capturing the sentiment of an “endless summer” love and a longing to relive those special moments. He intentionally released the song as summer was ending, believing it would resonate with listeners who were also holding on to the last bits of the season.
“June, July, August” is a heartfelt and evocative country song that encapsulates the joy and poignant longing associated with a summer love that, while fleeting, leaves a lasting impression. I’ve had a summer love; have you?
This is “June, July, August” by Ryan Hurd
LYRICS
We were rag-top Broncos ‘fore they were cool
Singin’ Kenny Chesney by a hotel pool
We made our own bar by the beach
My cooler was our stool
You worked at AJ’s, I rented rental chairs
I loved the way the breeze messed your hair up
It don’t take much, and I’m right back there
When we were young and drunk by the water
Kept that sunburned love gettin’ hotter
And that feelin’ never faded like the tan lines on your skin
I’d do June, July, and August
A thousand times again, eh, eh
A thousand times again, eh, eh
Everybody’s had that summer fling
But to me, we felt like a different thing
More like a real tattoo in a world of henna ink
But there’s one sunrise I wish never came
6 a.m., August 28th
It looked like Heaven, but I’d turn it back to the 27th
When we were young and drunk by the water
Kept that sunburned love gettin’ hotter
And that feelin’ never faded like the tan lines on your skin
I’d do June, July, and August
A thousand times again, yeah
Mm, yeah
Can it be summer forever?
Does love get any better
Than those three months together? Yeah
When we were young and drunk by the water
Kept that sunburned love gettin’ hotter
And that feelin’ never faded like the tan lines on your skin
I’d do June, July, and August
A thousand times again (when we were young and drunk by the water)
A thousand times again (kept that sunburned love gettin’ hotter)
And I’m right back to where I was
A thousand times, a thousand times again (June, July, and August)
Eh, eh (and that feelin’ never faded)

Nancy’s Notes:“Pelago” generally refers to the open sea or a large expanse of water, often evoking a sense of vastness and remoteness. In Latin, “pelago” is derived from the word “pelagus”, which means “sea” or “open sea”. The term is also used in the context of the album title by Ryan Hurd, where it represents “overwhelming passion” and serves as an “umbrella” for the songs on the album.

Not bad! I’m assuming that’s Lake Michigan, but Kzoo is about smackdab in the middle of the state. First time hearing of him but the lyrics are good for a country song. They could be used for any genre really.

That must be part of the rough-cut romantic persona. It looks good on him.
I have no idea if that’s def Lake MI but I’m thinking it is. His album Pelago is based on childhood summers spent at Lake Michigan.
Thanks, Lisa

What a great voice…. I am a bit worried a gorgeous talented lad might electrocute himself trailing that guitar lead a long the beach 💜💜💜

Hahaha!! I thought the same thing, Sis. So silly; just give the guy an acoustic guitar! 😂

A fabulous expose about Ryan Hurd, and I like his sound a lot, I’ll look him up … a great admirer of singer/songwriters who have a go at their solo career.

Very nice, dear Ivor. This song reminds me of Peace Train and Loner Deer sounds a bit like a gravely Cat Stevens …. not a negative comparison at all. Thanks for the intro. 🥰
Feeling better? 🤧

But on I go
I do not crumble or grumble
Despite the world’s
Rough and tumble
