This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month. 
Here’s my featured August artist and his song.

American country music singer and songwriter Ryan Hurd from Kalamazoo, Michigan initially made a name for himself as a songwriter by composing hits for prominent country artists. He transitioned to a solo career, achieving success with his own singles like “To A T” and the duet “Chasing After You” with Maren Morris, whom he later married. Hurd’s music is characterized by a blend of modern country and heartfelt, relatable storytelling.

Ryan Hurd is a rough-cut romantic. He embodies the new masculine …. simultaneously amiable and focused, respectful and edgy, commanding and supportive. There’s a lot of complexity wrapped up in Hurd, who’s balanced his budding recording career with a songwriting portfolio that includes hits by Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Lady A and more.

“June, July, August” is a song on Ryan Hurd’s 2021 debut album, Pelago. It was originally released as a promotional single in August 2021, prior to the album’s release. Hurd co-wrote the song with Zach Crowell and Chase McGill, the same team he collaborated with on two of Luke Bryan’s hits.

The song is a nostalgic reflection on a summertime romance and captures the bittersweet feeling of looking back on those three months as autumn approaches. It evokes vivid imagery of summer with mention of Kenny Chesney, hotel pools, working at a chair rental job, and enjoying drinks by the beach. Hurd described the song as perfectly capturing the sentiment of an “endless summer” love and a longing to relive those special moments. He intentionally released the song as summer was ending, believing it would resonate with listeners who were also holding on to the last bits of the season.

“June, July, August” is a heartfelt and evocative country song that encapsulates the joy and poignant longing associated with a summer love that, while fleeting, leaves a lasting impression. I’ve had a summer love; have you?

Nancy’s Notes:“Pelago” generally refers to the open sea or a large expanse of water, often evoking a sense of vastness and remoteness. In Latin, “pelago” is derived from the word “pelagus”, which means “sea” or “open sea”. The term is also used in the context of the album title by Ryan Hurd, where it represents “overwhelming passion” and serves as an “umbrella” for the songs on the album.
