Written for dVerse Poets Haibun Monday: ‘silver’.
Our host Frank asks us to write a haibun with
the word ‘silver’ as our inspiration. This is my haibun.

When I was a very small girl, I remember my mother wearing a silver fox fur stole. Other than her wedding rings, that stole was the most expensive item she owned. She lovingly and carefully stored it in a box in her bedroom closet. Sometimes I would sneak into her closet and open the box to run my hands across the sleek fur. Mom proudly wore her beautiful silver stole to church; I’d snuggle up close, nuzzling my nose into the soft fur and I’d always fall asleep during the sermon. The first time I noticed the two little fox heads on Mom’s shoulder, it startled me; I thought it was so terribly sad knowing their lives were taken to make the stole. I would whisper words of comfort to the twin foxes and that made me feel less sad about their lot in life. I loved my mother’s fur stole but when I grew up, I never wore fur.

whispers of a life

I remember the fox fur my mother wore when I was little. I was old enough, though, to understand and be repelled by the (one) head. I too don’t wear fur. I’m glad we’ve all made that step forward.

It’s quite the trauma for a young child, isn’t it? Had it not been for the two little foxes, I’m sure I would have gone on thinking of my mother’s stole as something innocuous, something soft and comforting. It’s a different time, fortunately.

Nice haibun, Nancy. I couldn’t wear fur either.

Thank you, Sarah. I appreciate your comment. While I have friends who wear fur, I’m not going to cut them off because of it. We have to choose our battles wisely.

Fantastic haibun, Nancy! My mom never owned fur, so it wasn’t a thing in our home. Like you, I have no desire to own any.

How things have changed, even leather is becoming less popular now.

Better not wear your leather pants to the pub! 😂

It’s a long time since I saw anyone wearing fur… but when I grew up it was the pride of most women.

Every once in a while I’ll spot someone wearing fur. It’s passé now.

My mom had a stole with one head (can’t remember her ever wearing it) but one was enough to freak me out. Of COURSE I had to touch the hard, pointy nose.
Let It Be is the perfect comfort song!

Thanks for sharing your memory and comments, Liz. I chose that song after I wrote the line about whispering words of comfort to the foxes. It’s a fabulous song.

Thank you for sharing the song video – so beautiful and moving. 🥹 Your story reminded me of my maternal grandmother’s furs. No fox heads but I remember touching them in her closet and having similar feelings to yours. Sweet and sad visualizing your story. 💝

I was given the most beautiful long Fox fur coat. I loved it. I love your haibun, Nancy ❤️

My mother had this very large fur coat I never actually saw her wear. In the coldest of winter when the wood stove was struggling to keep us all warm, she would drape this and other coats over our beds. I couldn’t stop thinking about the animals when I got the coat, but boy was it warm!

What a beautiful memory that was! I think many of the moms from our generation had coats or stoles just like this one. Thanks for the wonderful share, D!

A most compelling write. I was right there with you- Fur is not a bad word in Alaska- so should you feel comfortable doing so- you’re always welcome to do so up here.

Thanks, Jodi! I’m glad you could relate. I bet come winter out there, everyone’s keeping warm in fur from head to toe.

I had a leather jacket and a blue suede jacket, but I never wore anything with fur either.

Same here, Jim. It’s odd how people in general feel leather is ok but fur is not. I don’t seem to be able to eschew animal products entirely. I think if someone claims to be an animal activist, they need to be a little more honest about the subject than I am!

I don’t have any deep convictions either way on this issue, but we live in a dog-eat-dog world and if something can be put to good use, I am for that, but I can also see why people frown on others for wearing fur just to be extravagant.

Well put! I feel the same way. Thanks, Jim!

Oh Nancy, this is such relatable story for me. I still have Carole’s fur coat hanging up in my wardrobe …

I am with Sadje on this as I know you are. It was different in those days …but no less sad. 💜💜💜

Yes, it’s true. And, as I said to Sadje, ironically these days we are more understanding and protective of animals than we are people. Things and times have changed, not always for the better.

Nancy, your haibun brings back that layered feeling of childhood wonder and quiet reckoning. The moment with the fox heads—how you whispered to them—feels so tender and haunting at once.

Wearing fur was the in thing to do in previous generations but now…. We don’t follow this barbaric trend

Times were very different; now we have more room in our hearts for animals than we do people.
