Written for Only Murders In My Mind
Weekly Writing Prompt #69 and for
Gerry & Sue’s Weekly Prompts The
One Day Prompt #15 . This week’s
inspiration is the photo seen below.
This is where my imagination went.

Little squares of glass,
held tight in palms,
reflecting faces lit
by a silent, white light.
Everywhere, the hum
of digital heartbeats
replacing birdsongs,
drowning out the wind.
We walk, heads bowed,
fingers dancing on screens,
eyes unseeing as
the world rushes by.
Connections bloom,
a fragile web ignored,
yet gardens wither,
held hostage in our hands.
Perhaps one day we’ll wake,
and lift our heavy gaze,
remembering sunlight,
before the screen took all.

I look down on a busy street from where I sit and write. What I’m seeing now is not a lot different from the picture. What have we done?

I like your poem, Nancy. What a ridiculous world we have created. And thank you for taking part in One Day.

You’re right, Sue. It is a world of our own making and now we’re seeing the consequences. The One Day prompt fit very well in this poem. Thanks for your comments.

I wish I was able to make more use out of my cell phone, but some people are certainly taking this too far. Nice poetic story, Nancy.

Thanks, Jim. When I watch my grandkids with their phones, I’m amazed at how much I don’t know but I still know more than most of my friends my age.

I really liked this poem, Nancy … a very thought-provoking piece … when I saw them all hold their ‘phones’ like it was a globe, I immediately thought of this song …
