Sweet Silence: Thursday Inspiration

For this week’s Thursday Inspiration prompt, our friend Jim Adams has asked us to respond to the challenge by using the prompt word ‘knee’, referring to the song “Yap Yap Yap” by Squeeze or by anything else we think fits. I decided to go with people who can’t stop yapping!

Gabby was a really sweet young woman with a great job, a terrific husband, a beautiful house and wonderful friends. For her, life was perfect; the same wasn’t true for her family and friends. You see, Gabby never stopped talking. The moment the room became quiet, it was an indication to her that people were bored. She made it her personal mission to fill every lull in conversation with incessant chatter. If people weren’t bored before, they were once Gabby started gabbing! Even when her husband suggested she ease up on the yapping because she was putting people off, she just couldn’t do it. In an attempt to entertain her friends, she was driving them to the point of not listening, falling asleep and sneaking out of the room! Poor Gabby.

A friend of mine is a lot like Gabby. She believes if a couple doesn’t keep up a running dialogue, something’s wrong between them. I think something’s wrong with her! Silence doesn’t have to be bad or awkward. When two people can sit together in quiet, each doing their own thing, they have reached that wonderful level of comfortable, confident companionship, camaraderie, and lasting love. I enjoy the daily dialogues with my mister but I also love the silent times … sitting outside on the deck with our morning coffee, going for a drive, relaxing with a glass of wine … all in peaceful quiet. If we tried to keep up a running conversation all day long, we’d probably be exhausted and have killer headaches! And chances are we’d be pretty sick of hearing each other’s voice! There’s nothing wrong with silence; in fact, it’s golden!

  1. I don’t like long phone conversations and after 5 minutes, I have said everything that I am going to say. Sometimes I can’t get off the phone with my nephew, as he just goes on yapping and yapping.

  2. Haha … not much conversation in my house … just me yapping to Frankie, or talking to my ‘plants’ , and of course I’m always listening to my music … It’s ‘Amble’ at the moment …

    1. Not a single thing wrong with that, dear Ivor. I talk and sing to my plants and they respond by thriving. One plant is almost as tall as me! I need Bill to take a photo before I do some cutting back. 🥰 ✄ 🪴 💛

Lovely song which I never heard before. Thank you! ♡🎶♡
