Get Back ~ Song Lyric Sunday

Written for the June 8, 2025 edition
of Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday.
Here’s what I have to say.

This week for Jim Adams’ Song Lyric Sunday theme, “Last Piece Played”, the challenge is to write about a final song (live or recorded) played by a band or artist.

Several times when responding to Jim’s SLS, I refrained from featuring certain artists or groups because I was certain, due to the immense popularity of said artist or group, someone else would feature them. And wouldn’t you know it … every time I avoided writing about an artist or band, no one wrote about them! Well, this time I’m going for it and letting the chips fall where they may. I will be very surprised if I’m the only one featuring this band and song this week. After all, it is that well known.

Arguably the most famous final performance of all time, the Beatles delivered a surprise concert on January 30, 1969 on the rooftop of Apple Corps in London. Footage of the set was used in the documentary Let It Be. The Fab Four performed nine takes of five Beatles songs during their set before police shut the show down. A third take of “Get Back” would be their final song together, with John Lennon famously thanking the crowd and saying he hoped the band “passed the audition.” Though the members would collaborate at various times in the passing years, this would be the final appearance of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr together.

This is “Get Back” by the Beatles

LYRICS

Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it couldn’t last
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
For some California grass

Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back Jojo

Go home

Get back, get back
Back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Back to where you once belonged, yeah
Oh, get back, Jo Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she’s got it coming
But she gets it while she can

Oh, get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back Loretta, woo, woo

Go home

Oh, get back, yeah, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Yeah, get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged

Ooh
Ooh, ooh
Get back, Loretta
Your mommy’s waitin’ for you
Wearin’ her high-heel shoes
And a low-neck sweater
Get back home, Loretta

Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Oh, get back, get back
Get back, oh yeah

  1. I’m glad you played this. I always liked the song, and had heard about the rooftop concert, but it was good to see the video of it. I think most people, me included, were a bit shocked that this was the end of the Beatles as a whole. 🙂

    1. The rooftop concert was groundbreaking, Marina …. one of those unforgettable surprise events for the people in London near Savile Row that January in 1969. I can only imagine what it was like to be there. What a happening!

      Thanks so much!

    1. Were you still in the UK, Christine? I know our WordPress friend Keith was there and heard the music from wherever he was on the street below. What an incredible event; I had to write about it. Thanks very much, Christine.

  2. Why am I not in the least bit surprised that you chose this! 🤣

One of the all time great final performances, made more so by the fact that they hadn’t played live for several years. It was at lunchtime, which meant I was at school and missed it, but the tv news that evening was all over it!

    1. And I think you would have been disappointed had I not gone with it! 😂

As Brian Epstein said: “I tell you, there is no other band, there will never be any band like them ever, for eternity. They are the best. I say to you here in 1965 that the children of 2000 will be listening to The Beatles. And I sincerely mean that.” And here it is, 2025!

So, Clive …. that makes two events in the music world that happened quite near you …. the rooftop concert and the death of Steve Marriott. Were you also around for the Marc Bolan car crash?

      1. I would have been! And their legacy still lives on.

I wasn’t that close to London in 1969 – we lived about 70 miles away – but was much closer to Steve Marriott. As for Marc Bolan, that happened on my birthday. We got back from a meal out, turned on the late news and heard that. You tend to remember things like that!

          1. If only he’d known! That was the best decade in which to grow up. I was 16 at the start of the 70s and had enjoyed all that great music to help form my tastes.

  3. Yeah, for the Beatles, you couldn’t have a chosen a betterer response to the ‘prompt’, Nancy … meanwhile, down here in Aussieland, one of my all time favourite groups, Powderfinger, performed this last song at their final ever live show in Brisbane on 13 November 2010.
