GEORGE HARRISON – Known as the “Quiet Beatle”, George Harrison was catapulted into super-stardom as lead guitarist and backup vocalist with the Beatles. Born in 1943 to working-class parents, Harrison was the youngest of four children. While still in secondary school, he met Paul McCartney who invited him to join the Quarrymen, the rock band he and John Lennon had formed. The group underwent several name and lineup changes before becoming the Beatles. After the mega-group split in 1972, George continued performing as a solo artist and achieved singular success as a songwriter and performer. Among other achievements in his relatively short life, Harrison was an actor, movie/video director, record/film producer, author, and philanthropist. The 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, organized by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, aimed to raise international awareness and funds for the Bengali refugees fleeing the Bangladesh Liberation War as well as the victims of the 1970 Bhola cyclone. When times were tough for George’s Monty Python friends, he provided the funding for their movie, “The Life of Brian“, by mortgaging his estate after the original financial backer pulled out. George Harrison may have been the “Quiet Beatle” but he was far from silent. His solo career spanned from 1968, with his first album Wonderwall Music, until his death in 2001, though his last studio album, Brainwashed, was released in 2002. He released 12 solo studio albums in addition to two instrumental albums before the Beatles broke up. In July 2001, George Harrison announced that he was being treated for a brain tumor. By November, he was told by doctors that he did not have long to live. He died on November 29, 2001 at the age of 58 after a battle with cancer.

  7. He was my favorite of the band and his solo career was more about real music and religion than the other two. Lennon was too controversial and often weirdness off the charts. McCartney, naww. He had one good album, his first one with the bowl of cherries on the cover. I have many of Harrisons albums, so now I will dig them out to discover which ones. Good pick, Nancy. Traveling Wilbury’s, some of his best stuff.

      1. I have that CD, and Ringo performed at the Grand Old Opry a few weeks ago. I still have albums and CDs, like most folks my age. I don’t stream Spotify or the others, prefer the stuff that’s not in the cloud. No one knows what’s in the cloud, it’s alien.

        1. I know what’s in the cloud …. my head, when it comes to most things computer! All my little technological ‘wins’ are the outcome of major struggles so I don’t push my luck with the alien stuff. I’m thankful for those things I can do.
