GOLDFINGER – While 007 fans may debate the best James Bond theme song, many would likely point to Welsh singer Dame Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger” as an all-time classic. With booming orchestration and Bassey’s soaring voice, the song conveyed the coldblooded nature of the eponymous villain. In 2013, Bassey performed the song at the Academy Awards, celebrating 50 years of James Bond films – and our favorite secret agent is still going strong! Goldfinger (1964), based on the novel by Ian Fleming and starring the legendary Sean Connery as 007, was the 3rd James Bond movie to be released. In the film, the powerful tycoon Auric Goldfinger has initiated Operation Grand Slam, a cataclysmic scheme to raid Fort Knox and obliterate the world economy. James Bond, armed with his specially equipped Aston Martin, must stop the plan by overcoming several nefarious adversaries, including Goldfinger’s deadly Korean manservant, Oddjob. Jill Masterson, one of 007’s many love interests, was famously killed by Auric Goldfinger’s henchman when her body was entirely painted in gold! The music for the song was composed by English songwriter John Barr with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.

  1. I so enjoyed the movie and accompanying song. I was a bit freaked out by the suffocation by pain scene. We watched every James Bond movie as a family through re-runs on TV mostly. I can almost feel being in our den together. Awesome memories.

    1. That must have been a horrendous way to go! That wacky Goldfinger and Oddjob! It’s dangerous being Bond’s woman! 😂 My husband read all the early Ian Fleming books and we’ve seen all the movies. I love the older ones for their campiness; everything is sooo grim these days but still exciting movies to watch. So, are you a Sean Connery girl?

I’m glad to have given you some good memories, Jill! Thanks for a great comment!

    1. Excellent question, Liz! Certainly Tom Jones still has what it takes! Maybe Lady Gaga could pull it off? Or Kelly Clarkson? I just don’t know! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Now you got me thinking about it! There’s a new Bond movie scheduled for 2027 release. We might have to wait until then to find out!

  2. Hi Nancy, I can see by the calibre of singer why this might be recognised as an all time classic. My two favourite songs from the Bond franchise are ‘For Your Eyes Only’ and ‘View to a Kill’, the former I wrote about recently with respect to the movie. Cheers friend.

    1. Those are two really good songs from Bond flicks. I’d have to include ‘Live and Let Die’ and ‘Thunderball’ in the running as well. And ‘Skyfall’ was pretty good, too! It’s an interesting topic, for sure. Thanks, Anon!

PS – Who are you, please?

  3. I think Goldfinger is the best Bond film, period. And you add the theme song by Bassy, you have pure gold. Maybe I am a bit too nostalgic, well, actually, I am nostalgic, but the movie brings everything mid-sixties into light. Fort Knox, Learjets, girls flying airplanes, and who can forget Pussy Galore, the bunt of a thousand jokes, but a lovely gal. Worst theme song, that drool sung by Wings.
