April’s Fool

This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my featured April artist and his song.

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, winter is slipping out the door and spring is waving a chipper greeting of “Hello”. I don’t know about you but I am so ready for golden sunshine and warmer temps! Maybe the desire for sun-dappled lazy afternoons with mild spring breezes is the reason I chose to go with a country song today.

Country music artist Tracy Lawrence was born in Texas and raised in Arkansas. At the age of 15, he started performing and singing at such places as Live At Libby’s …. a music restaurant where owner Libby Knight would help local talent find their way into country music. In 1990, when Lawerence moved to Nashville, he signed a recording contract at Atlantic Records. The following year he debuted with the album Sticks and Stones, which produced his first chart single and first #1 hit in its title track. In 1992, he was named Billboard’s Top New Male Vocalist. Since then, Lawrence has sold more than 13 million albums and scored 18 #1 singles.

I chose Tracy Lawrence’s song “April’s Fool” to begin this new month at Mixed Music Bag. The song is from his debut album, Sticks and Stones, and felt like a good choice for just two days after April Fool’s Day. It’s a sweet song that has the listener questioning just who or what April really is. Give a listen and decide for yourself; I’ve already made up my mind.

LYRICS

There’s no way I could ever leave her
I’m addicted to her love can’t break the tie
A victim of my own need and too far to ever be free
Everything she does I somehow justify

I’m April’s fool
I play by her rules
She treats me any old way she wants to
Just as sure as clouds bring showers
And springtime brings May flowers
And a mountain breeze blows cool
I’m April’s fool

Many times I’ve tried to live without her
Like a frightened runaway child, I always return
To the games she loves to play
Where she always gets her way
Although it hurts I never seem to learn

Just as sure as clouds bring showers
And springtime brings May flowers
And a mountain breeze blows cool
I’m April’s fool
Aprils fool

  1. Here in SW Texas, every surface is covered in green pollen. That is what spring does to us. By next month it will be summer and temps in the 100s for the next six months. Good song. The guy in the picture reminds me of Pee Wee Herman, and the rabbit is a bit deranged. I’m looking forward to the bunny bringing me some chocolate eggs. Nice write up.

    1. Pee Wee Herman. Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in quite a while …. at least not since Paul Reubens got arrested for doing the nasty by himself in a movie theater. What a world!

I hope the Easter Bunny is good to you! 🐰

      Thanks, Phil.

      1. I used to watch his tv show, now how weird is that? Naw, the bunny hasn’t been good to me in many years. Every Easter, I buy a box of Peeps and eat a few. Here in Texas, we have the Easter Armadillo that delivers street tacos and cold Lone Star Beer.
