Hey! Welcome back to my music blog
featuring the comedic genius of Weird Al Yankovic.
This is fun, isn’t it? And can you believe
we made it through our first month?
How do you feel about that, Al?

Nearly a shot for shot remake of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”, this is the first time Al fully parodies the music video as much as the song. Almost every scene of “Eat It” is packed with gags spoofing the original, including the two gang members squaring off with utensils and a rubber chicken instead of switchblades. Vincent Patterson, the choreographer for the original “Beat It” video, also choreographed Al’s parody and played a gang leader in both “Beat It” and “Eat It”. Many of the same dancers appeared in both videos but while Eddie Van Halen played guitar for Jackson’s video, it was Rick Derringer playing for Weird Al’s. Michael Jackson liked the idea of Al’s parody so much, he co-wrote the lyrics with Al. Oh yeah …. I almost forgot. Al won a Grammy for this masterpiece. Shove that in your mouth and eat it!
First off …. this is “Beat It” by Michael Jackson
LYRICS
They told him, “Don’t you ever come around here”
“Don’t wanna see your face, you better disappear”
The fire’s in their eyes and their words are really clear
So beat it, just beat it
You better run, you better do what you can
Don’t wanna see no blood, don’t be a macho man
You wanna be tough, better do what you can
So beat it, but you wanna be bad
Just beat it (beat it), beat it (beat it)
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right
Just beat it (beat it)
Just beat it (beat it)
Just beat it (beat it)
Just beat it (beat it, uh)
They’re out to get you, better leave while you can
Don’t wanna be a boy, you wanna be a man
You wanna stay alive, better do what you can
So beat it, just beat it
You have to show them that you’re really not scared
You’re playin’ with your life, this ain’t no truth or dare
They’ll kick you, then they’ll beat you
Then they’ll tell you it’s fair
So beat it, but you wanna be bad
Just beat it (beat it), beat it (beat it)
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right
Just beat it (beat it), beat it (beat it)
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right
Just beat it (beat it, beat it, beat it)
Beat it (beat it, beat it)
Beat it (beat it, beat it)
Beat it (beat it, beat it)
Beat it (beat it, beat it)
Beat it (beat it), beat it (beat it)
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right (who’s right)
Just beat it (beat it), beat it (beat it)
No one wants to be defeated (no one)
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right
Just beat it (beat it), beat it (beat it)
No one wants to be defeated (oh, no)
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right
Just beat it (beat it), beat it (beat it)
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right
Just beat it (beat it), beat it (beat it)

LYRICS
How come you’re always such a fussy young man?
Don’t want no Captain Crunch, don’t want no Raisin Bran
Well, don’t you know that other kids are starving in Japan?
So, eat it, just eat it
Don’t wanna argue, I don’t wanna debate
Don’t wanna hear about what kind of food you hate
You won’t get no dessert ’til you clean off your plate
So eat it, don’t you tell me you’re full
Just eat it (eat it), eat it (eat it)
Get yourself an egg and beat it
Have some more chicken, have some more pie
It doesn’t matter if it’s boiled or fried
Just eat it (eat it), just eat it (eat it)
Just eat it (eat it), just eat it (eat it), ooh
Your table manners are a cryin’ shame
You’re playin’ with your food, this ain’t some kind of game
Now if you starve to death, you’ll just have yourself to blame
So eat it, just eat it
You better listen, better do what you’re told (ooh)
You haven’t even touched your tuna casserole (ooh!)
You better chow down or it’s gonna get cold
So eat it, I don’t care if you’re full
Just eat it (eat it), eat it (eat it)
Open up your mouth and feed it
Have some more yogurt, have some more Spam
It doesn’t matter if it’s fresh or canned
Just eat it (eat it), eat it (eat it)
Don’t you make me repeat it
Have a banana, have a whole bunch
It doesn’t matter what you had for lunch
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Eat it (eat it), eat it (eat it)
If it’s gettin’ cold, reheat it
Have a big dinner, have a light snack
If you don’t like it, you can’t send it back
Just eat it (eat it, hee-hee), eat it (eat it)
Get yourself an egg and beat it (oh, Lord!)
Have some more chicken (hee-hee), have some more pie (hee-hee)
It doesn’t matter if it’s broiled or fried
Just eat it (eat it), eat it (eat it)
Don’t you make me repeat it (oh, no)
Have a banana (hee-hee), have a whole bunch
It doesn’t matter what you had for lunch
Just eat it (eat it), eat it (eat it)

In a way I’m pleased I was previously unaware of him, listening to this all this stuff for the first time makes it all the more amusing!

Another fun one by Weird Al. Also kudos to Michael Jackson for co-writing the lyrics for Al’s spoof.

Very good point, Christian! Most of the performers whose videos were parodied were happy to work with Al.

Right. Though if I recall it correctly, they were also some who rejected Al “covering” their music. Evidently, not all music artists have a good sense of humor. Of course, you can say the same about humans in general!

Sure …. there were some who didn’t want the songs covered. It’s bound to happen.

Nancy I learned a LOT about the making of the Al parody from your post. Love the idea that most of the people from the original were on Al’s, that Rick Derringer (love his playing!) played guitar, and that MJ supported the parody and helped rewrite the lyrics. Al Da Man afaic. So you’re covering Weird Al for awhile?

No set plans really; I’ll just stick with it until it runs its course.

See what we can do when we can spoof and appreciate each other’s work? I had no idea of all the partners, and I love BOTH!

Liz, I think the more we know, the more we can appreciate all that goes into something like this. I don’t know how many videos Al has done but they all got a thumbs up from the original artist and many worked with him on his parodies. The entire cast from Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit were on Al’s Smells Like Nirvana video. That really says a lot.

Definitely my favourite parody of his 🙂

I like Weird Al’s parody better than the MJ original.

Well, they both won Grammys…..
Al’s video cracked me up where as MJ’s did not so on that alone I’ll agree with you. Thanks, Jim.

One of his best, and it always helps when you have a good song on which to base the parody. I didn’t know that Jackson co-wrote this – he deserves credit for getting what Al was doing.

While doing my Al research I learned there were very few artists who were opposed to having their songs parodied. They knew Al wasn’t making fun of them and it wasn’t taken personally. In fact Mark Knopfler agreed to Al’s parody of “Money For Nothing” as long as he played guitar for the video! According to Dave Grohl, you knew you made it when Weird Al parodied your songs.
“Beat It” is an epic piece and Al was starting to really come into his own with this masterful parody.
Thanks, Clive. I’m glad you enjoyed this one.

This is right up there with Weird Al’s best. And watching the two videos one after the other demonstrates the brilliance of both the original and the parody.

Spot on, Fan. This is exactly why I feature both the original and the parody. The work on Al’s video is flawless and I can see why he won a Grammy. As I said in my very first post, Al Yankovic is a comedic musical genius and not some flash-in-the-pan buffoon with a schtick.
Thanks for a great comment.
