January Heart

This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my featured January artist and her song.

Grammy-winning country singer Miranda Lambert is known for her fiery lyrics on songs like “Heart Like Mine” and “Gunpowder & Lead”. Born and raised in Texas, Lambert was still a teenager when her appearance on the singing competition show Nashville Star earned her a record deal. Her debut record, Kerosene, became the first of several #1 country albums, as her later efforts, Platinum and Wildcard, both won Grammys for Best Country Album. Lambert, who is also a member of the country trio Pistol Annies, has won the CMA Award for Female Vocalist of the Year seven times. Outside of the musical world, one of the reasons I love Miranda Lambert is for the company she and her mother founded called MuttNation whose mission is to support the adoption of shelter pets, promote spay & neuter and educate the public about the benefits of these actions. MuttNation also works with transport partners to assist and relocate animals during times of natural disaster, as with the current wildfires in California.

My song choice this week is “January Heart” from Miranda Lambert’s 2024 album, Postcards From Texas. In the song, we immediately find Lambert comparing the differences between her and her lover, including their perspectives on life and general temperaments. Where songs like this usually point out all the ways two people are not meant for each other, this song makes a case for why this couple actually goes together perfectly, despite differences. Lambert describes herself as someone with a “January heart”, meaning one that is cold and closed off. Yet, since she met her partner, she explains that it’s been a spiritual and redemptive experience to share their lives together. Since their paths crossed, her partner has never failed to meet her with warmth, love and security, which is all you can really ask for.

LYRICS

You see life in different colors
Like a diamond in the light
I stare off into the distance, see more black and white

You’re like a warm glass of summer
With lemon poured over ice
I’ve got a January heart, don’t we go together nice?
So nice, so nice

I’ve been livin’ in heaven, been livin’ in better weather
Ever since you came around, you haven’t let the sun go down
I’ve been livin’ in heaven, been livin’ in better weather
Ever since you came around, you haven’t let the sun go down

You make nothing but sweet memories
Every one, picked ripe from the vine
And I’m beginnin’ to notice the effects of your wine

You find new reasons to love me
I’ve been a tough uphill climb
I’m gettin’ used to the easy way you ease my mind
Mm, my mind, my mind

I’ve been livin’ in heaven, been livin’ in better weather
Ever since you came around, you haven’t let the sun go down
I’ve been livin’ in heaven, been livin’ in better weather
Ever since you came around, you haven’t let the sun go down

I’ve been livin’ in heaven, been livin’ in better weather
Ever since you came around, you haven’t let the sun go down
I’ve been livin’ in heaven, been livin’ in better weather
Ever since you came around, you haven’t let the sun go down

  1. Yes! We watched Nashville Star, too, and that’s when we first knew of Miranda Lambert. Such a great singer/songwriter. Later we did see her in concert and sure enjoyed that. She put on a super show! This is a really good song, I hadn’t heard this one, but I like all her songs. 🙂
