The Continuing Adventures of George and Martha, Vol. 5: Child’s Play

to write creatively in 100 words or less while
making every word count. This is my flash.

“Now you’ve gone and done it, George …. you stupid idiot!”

“Tell me, Martha, all-knowing bovine …. what is the problem?”

“The problem, Einstein, will be descending this slippery slope without breaking our necks.”

“How the hell did we get up here, woman?”

“Taxi …. the one you summarily dismissed.”

“I did no such thing!  Well, we’ll just walk down! Child’s play, Martha.”

“You’re drunk as a skunk, George. You can barely stand.”

“Nonsense, Madam! I’m in perfect control. Hang on!”

“Don’t touch me, you maniac! I’m falling!”

“Fear not, Old Girl! Your ass will cushion the blow!”

“I hate you, G-E-O-R-G-E!”

  1. Great story, and a rare Kinks song.

Willow has given you the location, in which they made a series of ads for Hovis. Memorably used for a Two Ronnies sketch at the time:

    1. Is it really considered a rare Kinks song? As a big fan, I love all their work (almost) equally;
Celluloid Heroes and Waterloo Sunset top the list for me.
The ad is excellent; a few other people have posted it as well. Obviously, as a Yank, it’s my first time viewing it.
      Thanks, Clive. 😊

      1. A single released some 15 years after their heyday, that didn’t chart anywhere – that counts as rare in my book! I doubt that many here would remember it, if they had ever heard it.

Others have posted real ads from the series, the one I gave you is a gentle parody from a hugely popular tv show of the time here.

          1. I think you missed out on them. Loads of clips on YouTube if you’re interested. Their Saturday evening tv show was a highlight of the week, a mixture of sketches, one liners and a story that ran through the series. The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Old London Town was a favourite of mine 😊

                  1. The ‘paperboy’ was Vicki Michelle, who later went on to play one of the main characters in ‘Allo ‘Allo, a long running comedy series set in occupied France during WW2, another classic of UK tv. Hope you enjoy the rest of it.

I think Benny Hill may have been more popular there than he was here – the prude squad did for him here.

                    1. We’ve had a lot of good ones over the years, as have you. Cheers and Frasier were great, as was Soap, though it was short-lived.

I liked those bits of Benny’s shows too, but he was also clever with his wordplay.

                    2. Soap had possibly my all time favourite line in it. I nearly choked laughing at both the line and the way it was delivered. This one:

                      Poor doggie 🤣

I’ve never tried watching Seinfeld, and Friends is about as much fun as raging toothache.

                  1. Absolutely, and from Catherine’s reaction I’m guessing that the Goofy line might have been an unscripted ad lib.

I agree with you on Friends, can’t comment on Seinfeld. I think it is still on here so may look it out.

  2. What a perfect pair. Did you know that is a famous village , the road is called Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset we have visited often . It is so famous they made a hovis advert there in 1973 it is iconic. 💜

    1. Yes! That is something I learned while reading the stories and comments of other contributors to this Friday Fictioneers prompt. This advert is brilliant. Thanks for the share, Willow. 🩶🩶

I love George & Martha and plan to keep writing about them, as long as I can keep up the banter! 😅
