Written for Sammi’s Weekend Writing Prompt #376
where we are to write something in exactly 20 words
and include the word ‘handmade’. Here’s my flash.

This quilted pillow is the only handmade item I’ve stitched.
I’m a cook and crafter but sewing’s not my thing!

Wow, that’s very cool, although I haven’t a stitch in me… 🙀💗

This is truly the only thing I have sewn that looks good! I never finish any sewing projects I start so I quit trying years ago. Much less painful that way! 😹

Better frame it. lol. I’m with you!!!!❣️

I sew, but I’ve never been brave enough to try quilting. That’s wonderful.

Thanks, Iris. My mother was a professional seamstress; the skill must have skipped a generation in my case! I can’t sew a lick and I was shocked the pillow came out as nice as it did. The quilting class was good and I was determined to finish what I started but quilting didn’t grab me enough to stick with it.

I love Peggy Lee’s facial expressions in that song. What a character!
Btw, I thought your cushion (pillow ???) looked hunky-dory.

Yeah, she was a trip, a very savvy artist and business woman.
Thanks, Matt. I’m rather proud of that pillow!

‘A trip’ haha. I love that description. She’s actually a splitting image of my sister in law.
I thought pillows were rectangular and cushions square?

I’ve never heard that about pillows and cushions! They can be any shape and size.

Really? How do you sleep with your head on a small square cushion? So I have lived 50 years thinking I knew the difference between a pillow and cushion. As my site’s key quote reads: “The more I live, the more I learn. The more I learn, the more I realize, the less I know.”

I don’t! I sleep with my head on a large rectangular pillow.

I’m even more confused now than I brought up the topic… LMAO

Hahaha! I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it!

I would… if I was resting my head on a cushion in place of a pillow lol

Nicely done! We try things, we succeed or not (or succeed but realise we don’t enjoy it) and move on.
I like it!

I like it too! I was a good experience but I don’t have the patience.
Merci, mon amie!

Love that pillow. Nicely stitched!
And I love Peggy Lee’s ‘tude. No one did, quite like her! Remember the shelter dog she played in Lady and The Tramp?

Thanks so much, Liz! A lot of work (and time) went into that pillow.
I sure do remember her as the shelter dog but she was also Darling and the Siamese cats and co-wrote a lot of the songs. That’s a great movie!

Are you? I didn’t know that, D! I’m rather proud of this pillow. I stuck with it and it’s the only sewing project I completed that looks good. Every scarf I ever tried to knit wound up being 8″ wide on one end and 15″ on the other! I’m better off in the kitchen or the sunroom with my plants! 😂
Thanks so much, D.

I hear you! My scarves all looked exactly like yours, but I love every aspect of the hand quilting.

I can see you now, quilting by the fireside, VT snow gently falling, fabulous aromas from your oven filling the house. Nice cozy scene 😊

Arigatō, shin’ainaru yūjin! You’re very good for my ego, Selma! 😂
Peggy Lee was a real pip; she’s not among my favorite singers but I thought the song worked.

This is true, Sadje. I do like to cook. On a good day when my back isn’t bothering me too much, I’ll make a few meals and freeze them.
Thank you. I know you enjoy cooking as well.

I love the cushion, it’s much better than I’d be able to do, I enjoyed the song as well 😀

Aw, thank you, Sweets! A psychiatrist would probably say my reluctance with a needle and thread stems from my feelings of inadequacy due to my mother’s near flawless work as a professional seamstress. 🙃 😅

Ah, that complicates the story a little, no need for feelings of inadequacy as far as I can see though!

Thank you, Michele. The pillow is very nice; it’s been in our sunroom for 30 years or so. I’ve seen some gorgeous quilted items so hats off to all the quilters out there. It took too long for me to make this pillow and after a while I began to resent it. Working with a needle and thread just isn’t for me. 🪡

You’re welcome, Nancy. I know what you mean about quilters – my mom has made some extraordinary quilts (fortunate to have one), and I have a friend who makes quilted art. Unbelievable! 👏🏻 “Resent it” – I feel ya – I felt that way about a pink Cinderella gown I made years ago for a coworker, size 44W. Lots of detail and lots of fabric, for days. Finished the last stitch then put that dress in my car, lickety split!
