Written for dVerse Poets Pub Quadrille #203
‘feeling crabby’, where we are to include some
form of the word ‘crab’. Here is my Quadrille.

Time after time
I have tried to
eat
a soft
shell
crab
sandwich.
It sounds so
appealing
but
tastes like
the chef
forgot
about
pealing
it.
Crunchy!
Crinky!
Croaky!
Cracky!
My crab
is crappy!
It’s like
listening
to
a CD
without
removing
the
shrink-wrap!

I’ve never had soft shelled crab, but my stepdad loved it.😖

This is fantastic! I might have winced then laughed out loud. Totally agree with your assessment of this abysmal sandwich.

Haha! Thanks, Cris! This sandwich is so popular. It looks delicious and smells terrific. What could possibly go wrong? It’s like eating pumpkin seeds with the shell still on! Can you say “Gag me with a spoon, boys and girls?” 😂

Sounds quite un-a-pealing. Great choice of song to accompany!

There’s no appeal! Ironic, isn’t it?
Thanks, Liz!

Haha! I enjoyed this. I don’t think I will able to enjoy soft shell crabs ever.

I want to, I really do! I just can’t get beyond the feel of plastic stuck in my throat!
Thanks for reading and commenting!

I totally get that.
You are welcome. It’s a pleasure.

The first time I had soft-shell crab it was marvelous, tender, sweet, and delicious, once I got over the revulsion of what I was eating. I’ve never had it like that since, it is usually like biting into a crab shell, which it is, and I suspect that it is all about the timing and they just don’t get it right. I remember sitting at a restaurant and everyone was raving about the delicacy they were eating, and I thought they were all nuts, or just wanting the emperor to be wearing something other than thin, crackly crab shells.

HAHAHA!! Exactly! I can’t understand how everyone raves about soft shell crab while all I can think about is swallowing shards of plastic! Could I be the only wrong person at the table?
Thanks, D! I was wondering if you were going to come back with a secret recipe.

I actually made them once and they came out pretty good, but the next time they were awful, so I don’t think they are worth the effort (OR the price) since I have no control over the timing of the catch!

Love me some crab and am hoping to sneak in some time to finish mine 😉

Do you eat shrimp with the tail on? I’d venture a guess and say ‘no’. That’s what the shell of a soft shell crab is like and when that sucker get’s stuck in my throat it is no bueno!
I love shrimp, lobster and crab. It’s the epitome of summer dining. But when I’m eating crab, I’d rather have the succulent meat and not the shell …. soft or otherwise! 🦀

No. And FYI, I refuse to leave it on unless I am serving it cocktail-style and people will use said tail to hold before dipping.
Nothing I hate more than getting a plate of pasta (or something) with the damn tails still on. FFS…

Never been my fave either. If anyone asks me why, I’ll refer them to your poem.

I don’t get why it’s so popular. Like making scrambled eggs and tossing in the shell.

Yikes! This does not sound appealing at all. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Right?? The shell is the consistency of a thin fingernail. I just don’t get it 🤷🏼♀️

I enjoy soft shell crab sandwiches, but if I was served one with a “soft shell” crab such as you have described, I would send the sandwich back. I understand that once a blue crab in the wild sheds its shell the soft-shell stage for a blue crab lasts only two to three hours before the shell starts to harden. If I remember correctly, most restaurant-served soft-shell crabs are hatchery raised. This allows for them to be harvested when their stage is just at the right stage.

The shell isn’t hard but there’s definitely some crunch going on. It’s the kind of thing I want to like but just can’t beyond it … like finding eggshell in your scrambled eggs.
