Nancy's Notes 🖊️🎶

Written for Haibun Monday where we have been asked
by Frank J. Tassone at dVerse Poets Pub to write a haibun
incorporating “May Transcience”, using the Japanese idiom
of “Mono No Aware”. My granddaughter was my muse.

She’s four now and it seems like yesterday she was barely walking, crawling sideways like a huge pink crab with her undeveloped knees brushing the floor in lightning speed. Her golden blonde hair is loose, flowing almost to the tops of her thighs like the fragrant flowers trailing from a Maypole. We laugh when we worried that these glorious tresses would never grow out and she would forever be the source of jokes by the mean girls in school. But that was not to be as this indescribably beautiful child standing before us with all the presence and attitude of Xena the Warrior Princess will stake her claim and win against any goddess wannabees. No more baby bubble pipes for this one; she has moved into the power bubble zone. She is a force of nature.

    1. In some ways, Jim, it is difficult. Think of it as taking on a new job with no prior experience. You start on the ground floor and work your way up, learning as you go with no training manual for reference. Each day is different, bringing it’s own set of challenges; some are frustrating, many are rewarding. Lots of mistakes are made, especially in the early months, but eventually you get the swing of things and your project begins to run smoothly. Weekly, sometimes daily, maintenance is required so patience is key, but the end results make it worthwhile. It all depends on how much work you put into the job because raising good kids is a job!

      1. I can understand it as being a job like you explained it as I had over 70 different jobs in my lifetime, and sometimes I had to fake it, because I didn’t know what I was doing and that made it even more rewarding when I was able to succeed.

  20. I love the description of the bubble queen when she was ‘barely walking, crawling sideways like a huge pink crab with her undeveloped knees brushing the floor in lightning speed’. I’ve watched my youngest grandson doing something similar; now he’s speeding about the place and he’s not even two! She sounds so adorable, with her ‘golden blonde hair…flowing almost to the tops of her thighs like the fragrant flowers trailing from a Maypole’, and ‘all the presence and attitude of Xena the Warrior Princess’! All hail the bubble queen indeed! And I thank you for the blast of Biffy Cyyro!

    1. Thanks so much, Kim! That’s my granddaughter, Colette, to a T …. a beautiful, loving, smart and fearless child at only 4 yrs of age. She’s coming over today for our regularly scheduled babysitting days and I can’t wait to see her. She’s a hoot!
