Poem

In The Cold

Today at dVerse we are asked to
write a haibun that alludes to
breath, breathing, or to breath
e.

The weather seems colder these days, perhaps that’s because I’m getting older.

As we briskly walk we can see our breath in the air when we talk and we laugh at my memory, just a fleeting sensory thought.

As kids we’d joke, pretending to be grownups who smoke in the cold.

A gentle snow fall
Crystalline flakes on my tongue
Breathing in the cold

  1. Nancy, your haiku beautifully encapsulates a nostalgic moment within the haibun… it truly captures the essence of a gentle snowfall and the sensory experience of crystalline flakes on the tongue. ❤

    1. Thanks so much, David. I always look forward to your reviews and comments!

This is especially nice to read since it was my first haibun and I really didn’t know what I was doing! (Thanks to Dale for a mini haibun tutorial) I’m looking forward to trying my hand at one again soon.

You CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Just ask Dale! ☺️

      1. Actually, I should not have said attempt but simply said haibun instead.
I am so glad I helped you out. It’s a first, tell you what! I know pretty much nothing about poetry, except this one 😉 Usually, it’s Merril teaching me new stuff.
        You are most welcome.

  2. Well, I won’t be trying to write a halibun any time soon. And after typing “halibun” it had those ‘wrong spelling’ red lines under it. So I highlighted for the right spelling and got halibut. But I don’t think that is what it is.

So not everyone (even the speller on the internet) knows OR cares what a halibun is. LOL But I am sure I like your poem better anyway. 🙂

    1. You might surprise yourself with what you can do, Sighs.
When I started writing in 2017, all I did was short stories.
I never dreamed I would be doing anything more than that.
It’s fun trying something new; what’s the worst that could happen?
