”PETAL” TO THE METAL

Rochelle at Friday Fictioneers is challenging us
once again with a very unusual photo prompt!
This is my 100 word response to her challenge.

Dad never learned to drive so mom had to take matters into her own hands.

She got her driver’s license in 1957 at age 40. Oh, she’d driven a bit when she was younger but women drivers in the 30s and 40s was unheard of.

Her first car was a Studebaker Golden Hawk and she ran that thing into the ground, literally.

One blindingly sunny day with the pedal to the metal, mom drove off the road, smashed into the cemetery and dug up a few floral arrangements along the way.

The old Golden Hawk. May she rest in peace.

  1. So that’s how those flowers ended up there. Love your title, Nancy, and the story’s a lot of fun. I was surprised to read in the comments that it’s not completely fiction – but did your mother really plough her car into the cemetery? 😳

  2. It’s usually the other way around. In my parents’ generation, women tended not to drive. My Mom only learned because my Dad, who was in the Air Force, was being sent overseas on a special assignment for several months.

  3. I love a story with a great pun in the title. I think my grandparents had a similar story. My Grandpa never learned to drive, Grandma kind of knew but had to suppress it because of the sexist mores of the time.

  4. Nobody gonna take my car
I’m gonna fill it with ground
    Nobody gonna water my car
    It’s got automatic drip irrigation
    Ooh, it’s a florist’s nightmare
    It’s got everything
    Gardenias, petunias
Big fat pots and daisies !

  5. I remember my long-haul trucker father trying to teach my aspiring-for -her-license mother how to get started up a steep hill from a dead stop in a standard-shift station wagon without burning out the clutch. She never mastered it…
