“Câmon in, toots! Donât be shy! Lemme take a gander at ya.
Stand by the window, would ya? Yeah, thatâs it.
Give us a little twirl. Yeah, just like that. Now back to me and lean into it.
Nice rear view!
Yeah, darlinâ, youâll do just fine.
Lemme paint the scene for ya, cookie.
Youâre the newbie on the derby circuit, a real cutie from Nowhereville. Them other broads, they ainât happy to see ya knowing their skatinâ days are fadinâ fast. Theyâre tough, the type thatâll chew up and spit out a sweet piece of sugar like yourself.
Yeah, youâre a timid little thing but ya can skate circles âround them other jammers. Besides, ya caught the eye of Mr. Big and he likes what he sees.
Ya with me so far, baby cakes?
Now weâre gonna take some shots. Go get dolled up while I ready the Polaroid.
Thatâs it, honey. Put on them skates.
Now it’s time for a little fun. Undo them buttons on your blouse and tie it in front under them boobs. Yeah, just like that.
Oh, man! Ya got the goods, alright.
Lose that hair thingy. Let them chestnut curls flow.
Wow! Youâre a regular Daisy Duke!
This here fanâs gonna blow them curls, just like skatinâ ’round the oval.
Ok, hands on knees, arch that back and pucker up.
Oh, baby Baby BABY! Youâre a natural!
Now weâre gonna kink it up.
Mr. Big’s gonna love these!
Big smile and say … ‘Bondage!’â

I think these women are so strong

Not familiar with the movie but I’ve seen some of these women in action and they are powerhouses!

Love the lingo. Took me right into the scene. The photographer really knows how to get what he needs from her to launch her into the roller derby world. It’s a bit scary – I hope she can handle it all. I imagine the scene you’ve built is pretty close to how it’s really done.

Just been reading up about roller derbys … Wow, go, Nancy! Great voice and character build. And, after I’d listened to Jim Croce, I had fun filling in Toots’ thoughts!
I love Jim Croce, by the way, but I didn’t know this song.

Thanks so much, Jenne! We used to watch the roller derby when we were kids and always felt it was something just shy of being scandalous. Those women were every bit as tough as I described … and tougher. I wouldn’t want one of them as an enemy! But they were real athletes and took their craft seriously, not unlike female wrestlers. Interesting thing about roller derby: it always was a women’s sport, with men starting to skate now, too, but it is still female dominated.
Glad you like dmy little vignette from the eyes of a photographer.
